Depends on your comfort with a weapon and your size.
I have a 12ga, 1911, etc., but my Springfield XD9 (9mm) is what I keep close and would reach for (with the good ammo). My most reliable gun, and the one I am most comfortable shooting.
No matter what you get, you need to practice with it. I can’t remember the stat, but in “high stress” situations you are like 20% as efficient/effective with a gun (I.e. the adrenaline is going to make you shake and miss)

A Taurus vs a Smith & Wesson?
5 rounds vs 6 rounds?
.410/.45 Colt vs .410/.45 Colt/.45 ACP?
No, I bet I'm not.

Nothing says frick off like the sound of a shotgun pumping.
the sound of it discharging in your general direction is a much bigger "frick off" than that.

A very bad one.

Oops. My bad, man. We don't have a Dem governor, so that one just went over my head completely.

It wouldn't be my first choice, no. But I got it because it's an easy to operate option for my wife if ever needed.
I have a Walther PPS M2 and a Remington 870 Tac-14 (plus 250 shells at the ready). But I'm looking for a higher capacity shotgun at the moment.

Many people say 12 gauge shotgun. Criminals today rarely travel alone. When the shotgun has to reload and two or three people have Glocks or whatever, the shotgun will lose. So if you pick a shotgun, learn how to load it under fire and always carry a pistol as a backup. If the shotgun jams, you won't have time to clear it in a gunfight.

Marlin or Henry 30-30. Simple and reliable rifles.

Simple fix.

Whatever gun you have ammo for is better than no gun, be that a bolt action .22 or a hunting shotgun or a snub nose revolver or an AR15.
For defending the home/property, an AR15 or AK. For carrying, whatever is reliable and small enough that you wont start leaving it home because its uncomfortable.
Theres arguments to be made for a shotgun as well but the general consensus is a reliable AR15 is about as good as anyone can do.

AR-15 with a handgun at the hip. Shotgun, you got to be too close range and not enough round capacity.

HiPoint makes a really nice .45acp carbine under $300 if you can find one.
A lot of stopping power in that round. 1911 and that share the same ammo.

A 20 round drum mag on a 12ga is not enough? Are you in Iraq?
