Rebuilding a deck and dock. Decided to replace my drill, so bought an inexpensive Dewalt at Lowe’s for about $100. It is a corded 8 amp with switch that lets you switch to hammer drill mode. I’m using it to drive 3 inch screws. After a short time of use, I get a puff of smoke, but it still works kind of. The available torque is noticeably less and it has difficulty driving the screws more than half way now. Guess I bought too weak of a drill.

For those more handy than myself, what should I buy to finish my project?

Thanks

There is a deal at Home Depot right now where you get 2 4ah ryobi batteries, a charger and a carrying bag for $99 and get a free tool with it.

There’s a great hammer drill you can get. Lots of good stuff

ETA: for comparison 1 4ah battery without a case or charger is usually $99

ETA: Try and get brushless. Get at least 4 amps. Get a spare battery.

As serious as you can be when someone tells you a 1000w drill can't handle a 3 inch screw.

Milwaukee is the answer. This is a real work test and shows how it out performs Ryobi and Dewalt.

You need an impact driver, not just a drill. I'm telling you, it makes all the difference. Plenty of options available right now due to Father's Day sales. Makita, dewalt, milwaukee or bosch are all great options.

Ive got a 20v dewalt max lithium that I paid like 100 bucks for. It’s pretty nice. Definitely recommend an extra battery.

I have multiple brands and types of drills and the Makita 18v impact driver is the best. It's an absolute unit. Use torx screws if you can.

The Milwaukee m18 is also good.

I replaced some treads on the steps to my deck the other day. I pre-drilled every screw hole because I’m not a knuckle dragging savage.

Makita LITERALLY invented the impact driver. There’s your answer.

I picked up two batteries as well. I can't recommend ryobi enough. We've built houses, docks, etc etc with all our stuff. Definitely get the impact drill

I have the same setup and it works great. The OP made the mistake of buying a drill and not an Impact Driver. Huge difference when you need a lot of torque to drive screws into hard wood.

I still have old blue ryobi drills and 12v batteries that somehow still function. Literally drove 1.5 lbs of 3.5 inch screws with it today. Which is why I don't believe OP issue is lack of drill power. 8 amps is a frick ton more power than 12 or even 18 volt batteries.
