Best? Always had retriever breeds and Dobermans until this little guy came along. They were all great dogs but he was special.

The Chinese call them Lion Dogs, he was not afraid of anything. Big personality and loved kids. Had to put him down earlier this year and miss him tremendously. Tough day. My nickname for him was Velcro. Great little dog.

Black Mouth Cur. He's sitting by me right now. Probably gonna poop himself. He's sixteen years old. It's close now. But I can't do it because he's the best boy that ever was in my timeline.

Hard to which one was the best, but the sweetest, most loving dog I've ever had was a Staffordshire Terrier that my wife's coworker gave to us after she had a baby. She was originally adopted from the pound and had obvious signs of trauma like heavy scarring. Absolute trembling mess around strangers, despite looking fairly intimidating, but the most good natured, fun loving dog you can imagine when alone with our family.

She was an old girl when we got her and we only had a couple of years with her, but simply thinking about putting her down, surrounded by my family in our living room, allows me the ability to cry on demand. So just in case that skill ever comes in clutch: Thank you, Daisy.

Currently have a blue heeler, and she's probably the best all-around dog I've ever had. Only girl and runt of the litter. Smart as hell, loving, intuitive, playful when you want to play but chill when you don't, calm and predictable in public and around strangers, 15+ year lifespan. Great breed overall in my limited experience.

Baxter - Half Great Pyrenees / Half Anatolian Shepherd. Lost him to cancer a couple of years ago.

He was the sweetest dog and loved his family fiercely. RIP buddy...

Always had either Blue Heelers or Australian Shepherds growing up. I presently have a Heeler I acquired after my daughter went to LSU. She brings a mini Dachshund long hair home for the holiday, and that dog is so calm and chill unlike that Heeler.
If I were looking at an inside dog, my wife would want that. But if it’s an outside dog that literally will follow you around but not engage you until you say so, hard headed stubborn and fiercely protective, I’d say that Heeler is a good option too. Every Heeler I’ve ever had basically understood English by about year 5. They are so smart.

I’d also recommend Border Collies. Had a couple of those and they are the best kids dogs. Super sweet and patient.

I’m not a lab person because they’re so needy and hyper. But they are very smart and good with kids too.

We've adopted mutts from the pound several times over the years. All kind of mixes, and every one of them have turned into lap dogs when things are cozy, but they turn into psychopaths when shite hits the fan.

Rescues tend to know that they owe their existence to their people.

I agree fully! I know this is long, but I'm a few fingers into a nice bottle of whiskey, and I feel talkative.

A year ago, we adopted a 10-month-old rescue. He had been on the street his whole life and had been injured. His back left ACL needed to be rebuilt. A local rescue https://www.bigpawsozarks.org/ took him in and paid for his knee surgery. We'd been discussing the idea of getting another dog to be a companion for our 3-year-old Great Pyrenees. My wife saw the post on FB, and the description said 1/2 Great Pyr & 1/2 Lab. We have owned several Pyrs and like the breed. We meet him at the rescue facility. He was still recovering from the knee surgery and limped badly. We hit it off immediately and adopted him.

Looking at him, I didn't see much Pyr resemblance, maybe some lab. We had a DNA test run to find out what he was. Our 1/2 Pyr 1/2 Lab was 50% GSD, 20% Australian Cattle Dog, 20% Australian Shepherd, and 10% Lab. To say he's a high-energy dog would be an understatement.

Silas is approaching two now and is starting to mature. He is an awesome dog. I've never seen an animal be so appreciative; it's like he tells us all the time, "Thank you for rescuing me. " He has really bonded with my wife and will go apeshit if he thinks she's in danger. He doesn't like strange men in the house at all.

as far as little dogs go, Dachsunds are the best. I grew up with mini dachshunds as the family pet so when wife wanted a little dog we got our own pup recently. Dachshunds are very affectionate, loyal to their owners and like their bigger cousins are scent hounds that love to have their nose to the ground. Her favorite part of training has been having her treats and toys hidden and having to sniff them out which is entertaining to watch and also can be a great way to teach them to listen (little dogs have always seemed harder to train to me I assume bc of their little brains)

I've had German Shepherds, labs, Australian Shepherds, mini ausi doodles.

All great dogs. The mini ausidooldles do not shed, which is great.

I had a lab mix and a lil scruffy wire haired terrier that were awesome. Both mutts that followed me to the truck while hunting so I kept them.

Current dog is a lab, she's great. Wife has a catahoula mix, he's terrible.

Black Lab. Smartest dog I've ever seen in my life. Zero professional training and she just knew what I wanted her to do. Case in point, I had just replaced the vinyl liner in my pool and was re-filling it. Her and my 5lb Yorkie were playing in the deep deep, the Yorkie couldn't get traction to get back up the slope to the shallow end. I just said "Sally, help Lucy". That dog turned around, got behind the little dog and started nudging her butt and pushed her up the slope! I actually have that moment on video. I've had some great dogs, but that one was very, very special.
