Best camera for beginners?

Looking for a last minute gift for the better half. For the past few years we've only had camera phones. What's a good camera for beginners? Hoping to keep it around the $500-750 budget. Canon Rebel seems to be the most popular. Any certain pixel, etc., I should be looking for?

I would look at the Canon T6i. That’s what I got my SO for Christmas. It gets good reviews and is very user friendly with a little learning.
You can buy a kit that comes with a couple different lenses and a carrying bag.

Couple of recent threads almost identical to this on the Tech Board. Take a look there.

Don't buy a DSLR if you won't carry a DSLR

Yeah the camera does no good if it's too much of a hassle to carry around and just gets left home all the time.

Canon EOS Rebel SL1 - currently the smallest and cheapest DSLR camera in the world.

Rebel T6i is a great starter camera that is on the higher end of starter. Anything more and out are getting into ge Canon 70D or 80D range which is a prosumer Model.

Especially when there are pocketable options that increasingly approach the image quality of DSLRs

I have one in a closet somewhere because she uses her phone

I vaguely remember you starting the thread before you dropped a grand on that.
You're an idiot.

I was looking at some mirrorless cameras and liked how much smaller and lighter they are than DSLRs...yet still had the ability to swap out lenses if I really wanted to. Seems like the best of both...portable and yet able to take great pictures.
If I was gonna get an expensive camera I would go that route. I have a point and shoot camera with a decent zoom that is waterproof and drop proof. I get more use out of that camera cause I can bring it with me everywhere.

I travel with an Fuji x100t, which is a fixed lens 35mm-equivalent camera. I used to use a Sony RX100 which was more in the category of "pro's point and shoot."
I'm just not lugging around a DSLR. The Fuji provides fantastic images for what I like (street, general travel, portrait) and it can be carried in a large pocket. I'm sure some of the mirrorless options are about the same size. Obviously an iPhone will often do very well in a pinch.
Now, if a couple years from now I need to be shooting soccer games and birthday parties, I may have to go back to DSLR land, but I'm enjoying not having to do it now.
