Its tough either way you slice it.. Ive coached 5th grade football where we had 35 kids.. All over the scale in size, skill and effort.. Some kids you flat out worry about getting hurt. I believe and still coach under the preface that they should all get a chance to play but that winning is the goal. You want to lose your best players to other sports or as a cohesive team, play them all equal regardless of skill and effort. Ive had parents tell me that 6th graders should all play equal regardless of the outcome. Ive seen parents skip the first month of practice and have there son join the team the week of jamborees because the games hadnt started yet..

I am OK with evenly distributed playing time through about 4th grade (9 - 10 years old) - and everyone gets a trophy through 2nd grade.

The question to ask is does the kid even want to be out there or does the dad just want the kid out there.
If the kid doesn't want to be out there and doesn't put in any effort it may be better that he doesn't play because the likelyhood is that he would have a greater chance of getting hurt.
When I played as a kid there was another kid that had no interest in football and it showed. Didn't want to be out there but his dad wanted him to play to "toughen him up". The kid ended up with a compound fracture of his upper arm.

Usually there's minimum play time requirements so you hide the kid out at WR or put him on the DL and tell him to "submarine". (dive on the ground and clog shite up)

Slight spinoff: I think I could put together a pretty good team in any sport with no other information about the kids than the shape of their jawline. Good athletes typically have prominent, square jaws. I guess it's the testosterone level, but IDK.

Gotta be earlier than that. Kids already in high school by then. I'd say middle school is when merit play should start. Some teams are more serious than others though.

At that age the goals should be
1. Make it fun
2. Teach them fundamentals
3. Teach them teamwork and sportsmanship
As for playing time, every effort should be made to give each kid as much playing time as possible.
Early on, like in preseason practice, let kids move around to different positions and see which ones suit their natural abilities best. I'm short, the job of the coach is to determine where each kid fits that gives that kid the best opportunity to succeed and help the team.
The idea of winning and losing at this age should not matter in the least to the coach.

I coached my son throughout is youth football days. He was a damn good right guard. He is a freshman in HS now and is developing into a good defensive end.

Pontiff (formally Metairie Playground) always had some of the worst parents in the JPRD system, as far as just being a prick goes. Ive seen many berate officials, scorekeeprs, coaches etc
