Sounds like the teacher was demonstrating the right of free speech in a responsible manner. . . which doesn't appear to a "free" thing to a certain demographic who uses it with so much liberty that you'd think it was a bodily function.

This why words like "tolerance" and "equality" are dangerous. All they mean are preferential treatment for certain groups and, eventually, ultimate tyranny.

They may need to re-think the school rankings list.
If it's OK for a student to say "F*ck" in anger, but not for a teacher to say "n!gger" in a discussionary manner, then that school is not as academically oriented as it thinks it is.
In a true academic environment, words are not bad. He didn't call anyone that word. He was just discussing its uses.

I just don't understand how a person can't even handle hearing the word used in academic discourse.
I mean, I get why some would get offended if some hillbilly was dropping N-bombs at them from across the street, but how in the frick do you lose your damn mind when it's used in the context of some sort of academic discussion on the use/abuse/meaning of the word?
Exhibit A of choosing to allow something to ruin your day when it doesn't have to. 17 year olds are dumb, but man I hope this kid looks back on this situation and realizes how dumb it is to say that a word is just unmentionable in any context at any time no matter what.

It's not the teenager's fault if the school over-indulges his "feelings." Lack of truth and accountability at the top always has destructive consequences.

This is what I assume. I doubt he just said it randomly. I personally wouldn't risk saying it, it feels weird saying it to a bunch of kids. I could see if teaching the lesson required it, there is an argument for it, but not worth it at all.

I don't say the word unless its in a song. I am a fan of hip hop and the word used with an "a" at the end is part of the "hip hop culture".
This is a conversation I had with black people. The people I had this conversation with agreed that it is okay to say it with the song because its not like when I use it in the song, it suddenly has a different meaning because I am white.
But other than that I can understand.
If two female friends are together and one jokingly says "you are such a bitch! hahaha" that's cool. But if a dude would go up to a girl and say "listen you fricking bitch!" it has a completely different meaning. People just need to learn how to be reasonable.
