Or, in the rural south, these businesses would be propped up and thrive - which would be fricking embarrassing as a nation. Not that I'm opposed to it. Sunshine is the best disinfectant. Even in Nowhereville MS/AL/GA/AR/MO I don't think most businesses would withstand the scorn of the non-mentally retarded among us.

The civil rights issue in refusing service based on race was a lot more relevant when that was put in effect. One race was systemically being discriminated against, effecting their quality of life and inalienable rights (pursuit of happiness). These days however, I'm not aware of any systemic problem with businesses refusing service based on race, religion, sex, etc. If one refuses, it's very easy, (almost anywhere, but I'm sure there are some exceptions) and almost certainly probable that one will receive service if randomly picking another place.
If there was some epidemic in that most cake bakers refuse to bake gay wedding cakes, then ok, I could see how some government intervention may be warranted.

Great point. I know more than a few areas in east tx and west la that would use this as a selling point to whites, and I could see it dividing these communities even more.

Yeah, it's worth noting that being for descrimination is easy when you belong to the majority. Being for descrimination as a white person or a Christian doesn't take much effort.

I guess I’m a little surprised to be in the minority here but I don’t think businesses should be allowed to discriminate based on race. It is morally wrong and I’m glad the law recognizes that it is because the two so often conflict.

With that said, while I don't really agree with a business denying people service because they simply don't agree with who they are, I don't really think the government should tell business owners what to do.
Like I said in the other thread. If I was going to a business for a service and I found out the owners were against who I am and would rather not have to serve me, I wouldn't want to go there. I'd rather give my business to someone who would be happy to have it.

And I am perfectly fine with discrimination. We discriminate every day. I am all about freedom, and that includes the freedom to choose who we do business with.

It's not. The baker cases were due to bakers who made it clear they refused service due to the sexual orientation of the client. They can refuse to make a red cake or a blue cake or a rainbow flag cake, but they can't refuse to make a cake because you're gay.
I disagree with the principle, but you don't seem to understand the way civil rights work.

The interpretation of whether or not you provide "public accommodations."
Ironically, the more discriminatory you are as a club, the better chance you have at defending yourself in court.
