You need to encourage that person to pick up a hobby (anything) that interests them and to stick with it. I lost my father to brain cancer when I was a little boy and I suffered through extreme depression for years afterwards. The only thing that got me through those hard times was sticking to my favorite hobbies and staying away from alcohol. I would spend most of my free time fishing, hunting, hiking, and hitting the gym. Something about being outside in nature and being away from social media always helped. It's not just a temporary distraction either.

Is this where you need the OT to tell you to see a Dr?

That's the very definition of the OT. Where every activity on earth is trashy and every woman has some flaw that makes them an OT4.

I haven’t been happy in 14 years. I was briefly happy in early 2017 but it didn’t last like long.

Go camping, build a fire, go fishing, scream in the woods.

find a solid meal plan, find a solid gym routine, work on something about you and your health every day, keep a journal on your progress.

Find a therapist, find a group therapy session, write your thoughts, then write how you could change things that need to change, and enhance things you are doing well, identify the important people around you and do something for them.

Seriously, if you are struggling we can go to a pelicans game and sit in my shitty seats. Your life is in way better working order than the Pels.

Depression is the most easily treatable mental illness. Almost everyone experiences depression at some point in his life. You'll probably pull out of it on your own but just know that you can shorten the time you spend down. Just a visit to your GP can take care of it. Go.

Find competition. Could be sports, a hobby, some made-up goal. Gotta find a reason other than bills and responsibilities to get up and push every day.

Exactly. Some people exercise... do something to get out of your own head. We were not designed to cope with the amounts of leisure time we have now. Find something to occupy your mind and your time.

Exercise, eat better, meditation, yoga. These things helped me when I battled depression years ago. I just didn't want to be dependent on pills.

Good solid advice. Trick is just to keep busy and occupied.
