I’d tell them to call me at midnight. At 11:58pm i would call movie theater. It’d loop forever until call waiting came in and I could answer with no ringing

We were poor growing up but my mom found money to have a “kids line” put in because, as she said, she felt like an South Central Bell switchboard operator with all the calls coming in.

I still think having to remember phone numbers is why I'm so good with number recall to this day. If I didn't have pen/paper I had no choice. Had to remember the number until I got somewhere to write it down.

Yep. I still remember childhood friends phone numbers 30 years later, yet I can’t remember new names for 30 seconds to save my life.

I had an old Panasonic black and white tv. When you tuned it to a certain channel (80-something?) you could pick up cordless phones. Heard all kinds of shite on there.

What is “time and temperature?” Is it just what it sounds like? A number you call and they tell you the time and temp?

I like this one:

Our family trick: when finished with activities, I’d call home “collect” (free for me) from a payphone; my parents would *not* accept the charges (free for them) and hang up. It served as my signal for them to come pick me up.

When I lived out of town, what we always did was if I called home collect and used my middle name, they would not accept then call me back. If I used my first name, that meant to accept the collect call, so they would accept it then.

calling REGGIE from an on-campus line was absolutely necessary to get in the queue faster.

After practices or other school events, my siblings and I used the practice of dialing home, letting it ring once, then hanging up. Then dialing home a second time, letting it ring once, then hanging up. Kept the same dime in my wallet and used it all through high school.

Of course, at home, nobody answered the phone until it rang twice on the same call.

Yes and that's why you didn't see much sex between teachers and students.

Seeing this phone and, specifically, that cord reminds me: When we were real little, my mom would get on the phone and cook dinner, help with home work, bathe my little brother who was a baby, whip my arse for acting up, and wash clothes and never miss any part of the phone call. Now that I’m thinking about it, the cord must have stretched 20’!

I used to prank call the boys town national hotline and come up with outlandish shite for these volunteer receptionists to react to.

Would record the conversations on cassette tape. Wish I still had those, or could find them..id say id make a show out of them on YouTube but they were so beyond Non-PC that it could never fly
