He is making bank if he has had an established cow herd for awhile. Last year guys running stockers also made out like bandits.

If I was buying stockers right now my arse would be puckering! Feed is cheap but interest and high cost per head amd making things real interesting.

Anyone catch wind of this early and make some bank off of beef futures?

No, I heavily invested in frozen orange juice futures because of Mr. Beeks' report.

Because it's just about impossible for someone to get into the cattle game now a days. Land costs too much.

I’m considering fencing my catfish farm in and getting some cattle at least I won’t have to mow the grass anymore

With all the talk about soybeans not being shipped to China will the excess soybeans lower feed costs?

It should have lowered feed costs by now but I don’t know much about who supplies cattle feed. If it’s the big corporations like Cargill and Purina they’ll bend the farmer over. Early on in the catfish industry the only source of feed was from those companies and they were expensive. Then the delta catfish farmers built our own mills and feed prices for fish dropped 50 dollars a ton. Our feed is 50 dollars lower a ton than last year right now.

Most people don’t know this but out of all the meat producing industries the catfish industry is the only one left where the hatcheries, farms, processors and feed mills are 100% owned by the farm families or local investors/stockholders. No multinational corporations monopolizing or taking advantage of us. Hormel, ConAgra, Prudential got out of the industry years ago. They got greased so good they never want to hear the word catfish again

I don’t know enough here to really say much. But the industry was headed in a bad direction before the tariffs. A lot of beef was coming from Mexico and Brazil, I’d assume better prices should entice more Americans to get back into it?

Nice summation of our food conundrum.

quote:

...We get a much more disconnected and disjointed food supply controlled by fewer and fewer people that operate with minimal input from local populations.

That is a precarious spot to be in for a society. Revolt rides on the stomach, and downfall of nations can follow.

Spot on.

The vast number of people, numb from years of multiple traumatizing events, don't realize we're at the precipice of chaos and desperation -- led by one indifferent negligent dear leader after the next.

inventory at the lowest level in 70 years amid strong demand

A lot of the older farmers are selling their herds because the younger generation simply has no interest in the cattle business. It isn't just because the prices are high

I recently retired.

I used to always do my grocery shopping early on Saturday morning after working out at the gym.

Now that I'm not restricted to Saturday morning, I happened to be in the grocery store early on a Tuesday.

I did not have steak on my shopping list, but I strolled by the meat counter, and they had two packages of prime boneless ribeye marked down from $21.47 / lb to $11.59 / lb. I snagged both.

Moral of the story, shop for steak early on weekday mornings if you can. If you can't, send your wife / GF / SO.

Yep, paid $6.99 per pound for ground beef at Winn Dixie yesterday

Bought 3 lbs - so still cheaper than eating out for us

I don't know if it's possible to eat one pound of wagyu.

I do this also at Sam's Club. I do this for pork and beef and not just steaks. I have not bought meat at the full price in a long time.

I eat a lot of steak and buy 90% of my meat from Costco and will continue to do so. Yes, it costs a bit more, but I'll cut the budget in other ways. I'll eat steak and sweet potatoes until I die.

At a restaurant or did you grill it yourself?

No one can grill a steak for me better than what I grill for myself, and for 25% of the restaurant price.

I reverse-seared it and finished it in a pan with butter and rosemary. Topped it with a blue cheese butter mixture. I very rarely order steak at restaurants.
