Does anyone know people who are actually the life in Mexico or Central America and if the supposed cost of living is so much lower and quality of life more relaxed... Considering a move myself.

My brother and his wife live in San Carlos, Mexico. They've been there for a year and absolutely love it. At first they rented a condo to see if it was a fit and have recently bought a beautiful house near the beach. Yes, the cost of living there is way less than here. There are also lots of ex-pats living there as well. I asked him about crime and such and he says no way. Too much money feeds the local economy that the police do not allow it at all. Tons of very cheap, nice restaurants with very good food. (he loves to eat) I doubt he ever moves back home.

A kid I went to high school with went to Texas A&M, got a finance degree and went to Costa Rica after graduation and never came back.
Last time I spoke to him, which was on Facebook, he said he loved it, but that he probably won’t ever come back because he defaulted on his student loans and had no intention of paying a cent.
So I guess he just fricked his parents in that regard.

I lived in Nicaragua for three years. It's fun but it'll make you go crazy.

My ex sister in law has done tons of work in central america. She says as soon as my niece graduates high school (next may) she is moving there.
Already has a house in belize and lower mexico.
She is a nut job however. She says it is a shithole and wants to help them.
No pics, because the ot will rate her a 2.3, at best

I am thinking about the same thing.
Looking at Costa Rica, Panama, Ecuador and the Honduras island of Roatan (English is first language here and low crime).
Right now Costa Rica is at the top of the list.
I have visited all already except for Ecuador.

I would bet an island would be lower crime. Kinda hard to outrun the law when there's no "there" to run away to. Chasing fugitives is easier when the cop can stop and wait for the criminal to start the next lap around the island.

He lives in Thailand and i doubt he comes back anytime soon.

Roatan was different. We stopped there on a cruise stop. Didn't know what we wanted to do so we rented a taxi for the day. He showed us around the Island, even brought us to his house because my daughter about 8 at the time wanted to see his new born. Almost everyone spoke English, half the island is a jungle. Older kids work in the AM and go to HS at night. Our driver was a HS teacher who drove taxis when the ships were in port for extra money. Kids (6-12) were walking through the jungle going home from school. It was pretty interesting, IDK if I would want to live there.

So basically your friend is a piece of shite that make others pay for the things he wants and contributed to the impending student loan bubble that will burst.
This is why not everyone deserves to go to college. Just like back in the 90's not everyone deserved a house of their own.
Like most everything in life, the only thing you deserve is what you are able to earn.
All of these bullshite liberal programs end the same, financial collapse under the weight of irresponsible useless people.

Everyone I know who has left either returned or kept a residence in the US.

Talked with a guy in Cabo San Lucas in April. He told me no way he's coming back. He said that there was big adjustment, to the slower pace of life, but he's all in now..
one thing he mentioned - you'll need to have a basic spanish ability. Once you get away from tourist areas, not much english spoken. The beaucracy is huge and not easy to navigate. he told me stories about trying to get his electricity set up and an account opened at the local bank.

Depends what you mean by low crime. Lower than mainland Honduras, yes. Low by US standards, no. It may be the Bay Islands but it is still pretty rough. You are much safer in New Orleans.

I’ve met some in Asia, teaching English 3 days a week and having a good life. Great dating pool too.

The big thing to remember is, assuming you keep your US citizenship, you will still owe federal taxes if you make past a certain amount (~104,000). So many people don't understand this and get slaughtered come tax time.

And can be a source of repayment on those defaulted student loans. No payment on the loans, no tax refund...and the interest on the loans continues to accrue until paid, no statute of limitations on accruing interest.
