Can't help but notice that this correlates with a release of inmates from prisons during the pandemic and a policy of relaxed enforcement in progressive cities.

BBC

Police departments across the US define violent crime in slightly different ways, but the data usually includes murder, robbery, assault and rape.

Overall, violent crime was up by about 3% in 2020 over the previous year, but this should be seen in the context of the longer term downward trend from a peak in the early 1990s.

Across the US, there were 25% more murders recorded in 2020 than the previous year.

This is a steep rise, but the murder rate is still far lower than than in the early 1990s, when it was almost double the current figure.

Major US cities have tended to follow the national trend in becoming safer since the 1990s, but some have also seen a sharp rise in murders recently.

These spikes in some of the biggest US cities have been of considerable concern to President Biden's administration.

The New York Times looked at 37 cities across the US with data for the first three months of this year, and overall there has been an an 18% increase in murders compared with the same time period in 2020.

Chicago has one of the worst records for murders, with a big increase in 2020 and a continuing upwards trend so far in 2021.

Imagine that. Attack the police for doing a career no one wants to do, run out all the good ones, and then crime starts skyrocketing? Who would've thought that was gonna happen?

I find this post racist. You should feel ashamed for stating an obvious fact.

With the police gone, all the white supremacists are free to commit violent crime in hyper-liberal urban centers.

No reason to add this other than to be an apologist.

Who wants to be a cop in this day and age?

Also, when you legalize theft like in Cali of course the crime will rise.

If I ever need anything that costs less than $950 dollars and I am broke, I will get a $60 Spirit airlines ticket and go to Cali and just steal it.

I'm offended at this statement, bigot. Clearly, the solution is more social workers and tearing down racist statues. The effect just hasn't manifested yet!

What does this mean?

The "Nation" goes as our major cities go. Not the other wat around.

The "Nation became safer since the 90's because leaders in cities like New York and Chicago got tough on crime and implemented policies that reduced crime in those cities, thus the nation followed the major cities.

Am I missing something?

That is not a very British headline. I would be more likely to read a story with the headline The rowdy yanks are getting rowdier.

Yes I get that and totally agree.

I was referring to the article suggesting that "Major" cities followed follow suit with a "Nation trend" in the 90s where crime reduced.

Cities lead the way in that, they didn't follow some "National trend"

I’ve seen this more than once.

Saying that the homicide rate is still lower than it was at the height of the crack epidemic isn’t exactly a “win”
