I’ve seen this more than once.

Saying that the homicide rate is still lower than it was at the height of the crack epidemic isn’t exactly a “win”

Not exactly a win. But a little bit of perspective that after a 30 year, continual decline in crime rates, a 3 percent jump in one year is for all practical purposes, statistically insignificant.

Now, I'm sympathetic to people who live in the crime hotspots. But a little bit of perspective is in order.

Yeah, your bullshite meter isn't broke. The lemmings lap this idiocy up.

How safe are those cities now? Things did get better but now it's a complete shitshow.

Now that I'm looking at that graph a little closely, is the one year jump in 2005 solely attributed to Katrina?

The housing bubble had not popped yet, so the economy was still in good condition that year.

Edit: Actually, the crime rate plummeted after the start of the housing bubble burst in 2007 and continued to decline all the way up to 2019. It's like economic hardship doesn't cause crime like you would intuitively think.

What will be interesting to see is how that chart looks once they add in 2020 and 2021.

Who wants to be a cop in this day and age?

Find a place with favorable demographics and decent pay, they are still out there.

Its obvious white people cannot be allowed to police black people. That's the primary stupid social issue with progs.

It is all because of police unions.

The local politicians are so beholden to the police unions because of what a "supported by XXXX police" endorsement means, that they will never put any kind of pressure on the unions. Consequently, the unions make sure they kept the dues flowing in at a high level by making sure it is all but impossible to fire a cop. Consequently the few bad cops act with impunity and the ire and vitriol caused by their actions carry over to affecting the good cops.

Weaken the unions, get rid of the bad cops, and all will be right in the world.

"Yeah, maybe, but it is not as bad as '91!"

That's the go-to line these days.

It’s not just that we are experiencing record setting murders, but that it’s not relegated to known bad areas of the city, but rather spread out all over the place, and that’s very disconcerting for a lot of tax paying residents of Baton Rouge and St. George especially.

But all of this coincides with a general neglect of the city and an ever growing population of homeless, druggies, and mentally unstable people on virtually every surface street you drive down, and this causes people to really stop and think if it’s a place that they want to continue to invest in long term in business, or living there. SWB and Paul better plug in to something and quick, because things will get a lot worse before they’re ever going to make a change for the better. It’s like watching two people playing the fiddle as Rough Rouge burns.

Have you not been paying attention the past year? They don't have to "fire a cop", they are quitting or retiring in record numbers in cities across the country. Your union hypothesis doesn't hold water when those unions can't even keep cops on the job.
