EBR is getting 13 million dollars for a downtown train station on S 14th street.
$7M of which might be spent on the structure. The other 6M will be funneled to cronies. Such a sham.

Public transportation works in places with enough of a population for it. Where’s the demand. No one is lining up for a BR/Nola train connection
Population density is indeed the key. You need enough people going to the same places for something like this to pay off. We simply don't have that here. Our population and our high-demand destinations are both far too spread out (with the exception of the FQ). This might get some use for special events (Essence, Saints games, Jazzfest, etc) but other than that it's going to basically be a longer version of a CATS route.

This train will just be a party bus ride for college students and vagrants.

Wouldn't the price be prohibitive?

Lafayette to New Orleans or Lafayette to Tiger Stadium would get some use.

About $20 million in the first round from the feds
Does that even buy the locomotive?

They have been talking about this for a decade now. Nobody wants it but I think that it needs to be studied again.

Is the train going to have a stop at the airport in N.O.? New terminal is on the opposite side of the airport from where the railroad tracks are.
The metro and commuter rail station for the airport in Miami is on the opposite side of the airport than the terminal entrance. They have a sky train and a shuttle to get ppl from the terminal to the station. Having to need a shuttle to get ppl from an airport station to the terminal is one of the smaller problems with this project and it’s one that is easily fixed.

I heard the state has already purchased a locomotive.

Florida’s Brightline service, between Miami and WPB (soon to be Orlando).
I used Brighline when I lived in Miami. It’s the cat’s meow. However it’s successful because it’s run by a private company that owns the rails it runs on. Tri-Rail is a local government run commuter rail and contracts with Amtrak and uses rail that they do not own and its service is shitty to say the least. The BR-NOLA rail is going to be run by a local government agency partnering with Amtrak. It’s going to be a disaster.

I think the only thing that would be of interest to most people in BR/Nola would be some high speed rail that could make the trip in 35 minutes or something like that. Otherwise it's really not of much use. There isn't a huge population that commutes between the two cities for work or anything. It would probably take me double the time to take the train than just to drive.

ROLAThe money is going to spent and I’d prefer it here rather than in Mississippi or New York.
True, but in the end state tax dollars eill be put up as matching funds and then to subsidize the venture. Watch.

Buys the land and builds the stations...per the article.

Like the interstate system?

It will.
What is about to happen is Amtrak gets dollars for a Dallas to NOLA route. No one rides it because the times suck. Everyone thinks that represents commuter train service between the two areas.

Apparently there is now a plan for a road of some sort near the old airport access road. Part of that plan - eventually - is for it to feature some sort of automated tram / people mover. It would connect this future train station and economy parking / rental cars to the terminal.

The planned Amtrak line to Baton Rouge travels through the south campus. Once built, the north-south connector road would allow passengers on the proposed rail line to swiftly travel to the north terminal after they disembark at an Amtrak stop near the old south terminal.
One day, airport officials hope to build an even quicker connection — an automated people mover like at the airport in Tampa, Florida. The people mover, which is in a very early phase of planning, would use the same pilings as the connector road. That project would take at least five years and $500 million to build, officials say.

If it goes to MSY, and also all the way to downtown New Orleans where Union Station is right by the Dome, then i could definitely see using it when it comes to sporting events, assuming it's not full of a typical CATS bus. Being able to fly into New Orleans and get downtown via a train would be great, or taking a train to LSU/Downtown for a game. Hell if i wanted to go to a Pelicans game or Saints game and it took me close enough i'd rather that than drive and find parking, and then deal with the traffic. If it took me 2 hours to get to a Pels/Saints game from BR by train, and i had minimal walking to do in NO, i'd be all for that.
7-8 times a year for LSU football games
8-10 times a year for Saints games
5 days a year for second weekend of Mardi Gras
15 days a year for Jazz Fest / Essence Fest / French Quarter Fest
I'll be generous and say it gets good use 50 days a year. That's it though.

Yes. They are building a new connector road to the future train station from the new terminal. I don't know when or how. But I expect it'll be done by 2044.

This will be more useless than installing bike lanes or the Government Street “Road Diet” fiasco. LOL
