Find a house to rent around the Brightside/River Road, Bluebonnet area.

Don’t go north of campus gates on Nicholson Dr. one foot.
Don’t go north of campus gates on Highland Rd. 1000 feet.
Don’t go north of Baton Rouge past government street.

If you’re going to LSU and have a family, do NOT live far away from campus. You’ll be in your car 1.5 hours a day.

You’re gonna want to move into the apartments right behind the bars at Tigerland. Walking distance to the games, the bars and a short drive to class.

With that budget, you should have no issues. If you don’t mind paying for private schools, I would go with the neighborhoods around the LSU Lakes (LSU Avenue, Park, Perkins near the overpass, morning glory, Broussard, Hundred Oaks, etc)

Areas to avoid due to crime:
1. Anywhere north of Florida Blvd except for downtown.
2. Any street named after a president or a state
3. Anywhere between a couple blocks north of the north gate of campus and I-10 from the river to park Avenue
4. The little neighborhoods off staring and gardere lane between nicholson and perkins
5. Valley park (a little neighborhood clustered around the interstate between Acadian and College
6. Neighborhoods between Florida and government street from I-110 to S Eugene

Areas to avoid due to traffic:
Anywhere east of Airline Highway in br
Anywhere southeast of Lee drive in br
Neighborhoods in AP off of LA 42

If you’re sending your kids to public schools, I recommend living in Ascension Parish somewhere around LA 74. Just make sure to check and be sure the property doesn’t flood and that your kids are zoned for Dutchtown rather than EA. 74 to 30 isn’t a bad route to campus.

Central and/or Zachary wouldn’t be awful either.

He's going to be a freshman at LSU. Proximity to campus in a safe, comfortable spot is all he needs to make college life easier by avoiding any traffic at all possible.

you can probably find something cheap in Zion City or Mall city. You'll definitely want to stick to streets names after presidents or indian tribes.

Capital Heights is a good location that is not a student ghetto but is close to LSU. check out Bee Nice Music in Capital Heights i can introduce you to a long term air BNB to give you time to acclimate before you sign a lease.

Exactly. Dude is posting for help and people want to pass the usual repetitive comments they think is comedy gold.

Kingbob has some good advice. I’d just go on Zillow and check the house prices on where you’re renting. That should be an indication. And once you’ve driven through the neighborhood, your natural instinct should tell you to avoid or not.

I live in the Lake Beau Pre Condos which are south of LSU on River Road. It’s a safe, gated community with a mixture of students, families and a few older people like me. Rent is reasonable too.

He also has small children, one of which will start school before he graduates, so school districts do matter.
