Spent all day today cleaning out the garage, putting tools away, etc. it got me wondering what basic tools should every household should have.
Just to start, you could get one of those basic all-in-one tool kits and be fine IMO. Just replace items in it with better ones as you figure out what you use often and buy power tools as you need them.
A good ladder would be on my list of must-haves for those just starting out.

Huh? I have a house and no garden or yard. Very common here and many major cities

Best $75 investment I’ve made in the last year. I’ve always had a 6’ ladder, used it many times in an unsafe manner. Bought a fiberglass 10’ ladder.
I put that 6’ ladder to the curb today. Someone has already picked it up

IDK man, I'm 57 and still buying tools. I'm probably not the best one to answer this.
This.
Have everything listed plus
BTW I’ll be 70 next month. It just doesn’t end!

My biggest pet peeve is a cheap screwdriver.
As a former electrician, once you’ve used a Klein screwdriver, everything else is junk.

Blinker Fluid Funnel
You joke, but not having a funnel when you need one is a pain in the arse. A lot of people will make some kind of temp paper funnel and end up spilling shite every where

I’m referring to a slot head Street key wrench to turn off the main water supply at the meter.

I made one that is 4' long. Years ago, I opened the top and there was a snake inside by the meter. Rebar and two small pieces of flat bar stock. I am not a welder but I have a little cheap welder. One piece on each side, then a T-handle.

Now you have a reason to get the sports car.
Can’t let that jack go to waste right.

One large bench type and one smaller, quality tool boxes with ball bearing drawer slides to store all this stuff. Socket organizers. And a wall locker for the larger items.
Plus locks to keep your wife from borrowing pliers and screw drivers and not putting them back!
I've bought her several small sets hasn't worked out yet.
Regardless, mine are never as organized as they could be.
Good torque wrenches are a must, not basic but when needed I've got them.
