Basenjis are cool AF, but as others have said, you have to know how to work a dog in order to properly raise one. They're wild as hell, and incredibly smart. They also don't bark - they yodel. Used to be called African Barkless Dogs.

If you have property and livestock, it's right up your alley. If you live in an apartment or the suburbs, probably not a good companion.

Respectfully, you’re dumb….respectfully. I’m sure your mutt is IG cute though.

I have very little tolerance for shedding. I think because I said that I'm active, don't like shedding, don't like barking, and prefer medium-sized dogs
Get yourself a wheaten terrier, baw. Ours does not shed one hair on her head.

I will say, she never barked until we had kids. Now, she barks if anyone walks by. Still trying to solve that one.

Had 2 growing up. You can not contain them. Read their history, they come from the plains of Africa. They run, run, run and are dumb as hell. The male we had was given to us because he knew nothing about the breed other than its barkless. Poodles are hard headed bec they are smart, but can be taught, Basenji's not so much. I have a 35 lb red poodle right now. Got her from the shelter. Has never had one mistake in the house and fit right into the family.

They are pretty cool. A friend has one and if he doesn’t like you he just does t mess with you. Doesn’t bark.

Schnauser hasn't been mentioned, but they shed very little, aren't too too hyper and are medium sized. Search for dog rescues, not just the pound or Humane Society. There are probably 10 in your area. Be aware that they're going to require an application, ask for vet references (which you obviously won't have any), any might even want to do an in home visit before approving your application. Our 2 dogs came from different rescues, and they play well together, like to snuggle with the kids and each other, kennel trained well, and are overall good dogs.

Get a rescue. As much as I want to suggest getting a dog from the local shelter, it really is hard to pick out one that would work with your family from there.

I've gone through local rescue groups where the dogs are fostered at a home. So the foster family can tell you the dog's habits and disposition.

When you go to a shelter, there are a hundred dogs locked in cages who all want nothing more than to get the hell out, so they all bark their asses off when you visit them.

It can be more challenging if you go in person. However, just follow the Facebook page for CAA and they post every dog that goes through intake. Once they’re eligible for adoption, their Petfinder indicates as such and you can go meet the one you want at the shelter rather than roaming the entire building looking at pit bulls.

There are a lot of dogs (sheps and huskies) that go through there because irresponsible people get them without doing research who can’t handle them. They deserve a chance

I agree. But for a first time dog owner, like the OP, I'd hate for him to choose a dog that's a holy terror which he may have to consider giving up.

Going through a rescue at least he'll have the benefit of other people's experiences with the dog in a home setting.

I have a year old silver lab, which is WAY more Weimaraner than Lab, and the thing is like a damned super ball...never stops.

You can practically hearing him buzzing.

ETA: Oh, and his name is Sterling Archer.

We have owned 2 Toy poodles. Our first one was a silver female. She passed away at 11 yrs old, and we bought a white female who lived to be 17 yrs and 4 months. Both were extremely intelligent and loving!
Poodles do not shed at all.

The one problem with some hounds is that they howl, sometimes quite loudly and often.

I currently have a Carolina Dog, which is a bigger and easier to train dog than a Basenji. While I don't notice the shedding, my wife does inform me that they do indeed shed. Might not notice as much since hair color is rather light in this breed.

That’s not a breed that you get based on a quiz. They can be difficult.
