There's been a few dog posts today, but I've been thinking about getting a dog. Have never had a dog/parents don't like pets. I took a stupid internet quiz and it said the dog that fit my interests is a Basenji. Anybody here ever have a Basenji or have advice for a good breed for a first-time owner? I mostly want a dog that doesn't shed a ton, but don't really want a golden doodle. I may consider a poodle too.

Absolutely not, especially for first time owner. That’s a challenging breed

Why would anyone ever base a decision off of an internet quiz? Find a local shelter to adopt or petfinder.com & pick one

Poodle would be way better for first time owner.

Basenjis are strong willed af. Have you ever had a cat? Trying to get a Basenji to do something they don't want to is the same as a cat. They are not people pleasers like most dogs.

My sister had two of them. Both were hyper as hell.

Go find one at a shelter. I rescued one recently. Most thankful dog I've ever had. She just finished dog training and is amazing.

American Kennel Club Quiz

I believe this is the quiz I took.

And like others have said, most of the shelters in south LA that I have visited websites for only have pit bulls, chihuahuas, or pit bull mixes.

Low intelligence mindset.

About as dumb as your typical pit Bull owner

That's why I came here. I don't want to just rely on an internet quiz. Trying to do research for a dog that would be a good fit.

Look for “Free to a good home” puppies or dog. Check newspaper, veterinarian office, etc.

If you can "unlock" their abilities they have some neat abilities in the field, but I don’t recommend them as a pet. "Barkless" is very misleading btw, Id take barking over the whine they make.

Get a Lhasa Apso. They are great indoor dogs.

There are some dogs that you need a fenced in yard or nearby dog park and a ton of free time for. A Basenji is one of them.
