They had to have known this was going to happen, and you'd know about it. The fact that nobody primed you for it beforehand is somewhat worrisome.

Well then someone up the chain may be looking at the new golden boy. Find out from both of your new reports if they are anyhow related to the boss. Then kill that one.

They have both been here 2 years. I've been here 10.

My current assumption is that these 2 resources are from a particular offshore IT heavy culture. Their previous boss was of the same culture.

I couldn’t care less if someone under me in the organization made more than me. I only care that they do what they are supposed to do, and that my boss is happy with me.

As long as I get my share of the pie, I’m good. I’m not going to begrudge anyone getting their share.

Why do you keep calling them resources

People need to realize that your salary is not a reflection of your value or worth to the company; it is strictly a reflection of how you negotiate and how much leverage you have.

These guys under you at some point negotiated a higher salary because they had a higher floor/starting point when they were hired, or someone else wanted to hire them and they were given a bump to stay with the company.

Actually, I had that happen a few times in my career. Honestly, most of the time you just have to swallow your pride and let it ride for a time, until it be remedied through the normal course of raises.

I found that happening most of the time because I had beeen promoted relatively quickly whereas my employee had been in his position a very long time.

This is more common than you think especially if the developer has more experience or is directly attached to revenue attainment (not overhead management).

I've had people leave management roles to earn more money.

Similar situation, I've been promoted 3 times in 5 years. They have only been here 2 years though. I wouldn't care if I had a senior manager reporting to me that was similar salary. This is 2 levels below me at the dev level.

Just laugh that your capabilities are not worth more than the other person and just be happy. There is no rule requiring supervisors to make more.

Should you be a director if you have to ask an internet college sports board what to do?

Why do people assume everyone gets performance based bonus structures?

Bc the OP said that the subordinate’s base salary was higher than his. Saying “ base salary” implies that there is other financial compensation.

You're right there is not a rule, but my performance and achievements far exceed that of theirs. Again I often assist in their day to day tasks because of lack of knowledge, aka I train them.

Typically ICs who report to directors have comparable salaries, not usually higher, but based on experience and skillset they are going to be comparable.

Remember, Management is a skill, whatever this dev staff does is also a skill.

Just because they report to you does not mean that the company values them less.

ICs who work for directors are typically the top end of their skill set and rewarded as such.

Sounds like you are training your replacements. Better brush up that CV and STFU for now.

I also have another employee in my team that has the same role as the 2 new developers that makes 50k less.

Those on my team with lower salaries are from another company that was bought out by the company I work for now about 7 years ago. Seems to be a pattern for those from the purchased companies are less valued.
