Can you use the baking soda in the boxes like we keep in our cupboard to put in pool? Is is the same as the big bags?

Yes, and food grade baking soda is usually cheaper than the pool version, total alkalinity up

Look for the big five and 10 lb bags of Arm & hammer, often on sale

Yes, absolutely. It raises PH levels, and Muriatic Acid lowers PH levels.

Also, if you have a chlorine pool, you can just use off brand household bleach as long as you dilute it and pour it directly into the skimmer so you don't discolor your liner. WAY cheaper than buying chlorine tablets and shock. Still have to buy the stabilizer, tho.

Now find me a cheap source of salt. Keeping my 40,000 gallon pool adequately salted using the 40 lb bags at the big box stores feels like sweetening a 55 gallon drum of coffee using those little packets. And the price of salt has gone up three or four times in the time I have on my pool.

us ot ballers prefer not to just throw that money away

Yes, but get the big bag from Costco. Those little boxes aren't going to do crap for your alkalinity.

It's pretty inefficientfor pH, but works great for alkalinity.

Sodium BiCarbonate

Increases PH and Alkalinity

Worked on pools in college.

No, it wasn't like the movies, unfortunately. Every time I got hit on, she was ugly.

Baking soda is sodium bicarbonate. What are you looking to do with your pool? Increase/buffer the pH?

I find it odd that you are having low pH issues with your pool. Is your water source low pH or did you put too much muriatic acid in your pool?

FWIW, baking soda or sodium bicarbonate is a pH buffer. It's good to have some level of buffer in your pool so you don't over or under shoot your target pH.

I would just go with the commercial brands of pH Up or pH down, follow the directions and call it a day. The chemistry is already done for you in the instruction package.

You guys are all much better pool owners than me. I throw some shock in there once a week and never check the chemical levels

Arm and Hammer has an article on using baking soda to adjust your pH.

not very cost efffective.

just get a giant bag at walmart or costco. its like $9 and you should only need one or MAYBE two to get the pH balanced.
