Back when you had substantive home improvement shows tackling real home improvement

The founding fathers of home improvement shows, and when it wasn’t as much about the drama involved as it was real hands on home improvement education
We’d follow Bod under the house to take a look at some substrate damage, and then into the living room to discuss load bearing walls, and then on to the upstairs to check on Norm installing a new pocket door, and another contractor installing a radiant heated ceramic floor tile in the bathroom.
Man, do I miss these shows. These guys were truly awesome, and Norm’s show New Yankee Workshop was epic, he an all his measured drawrings. I realize this probably appeals to a pretty select group here, but If you watched these guys back in the day and owned a home or liked wood working you probably got inspired.
Pre internet, this was the tits.

Bob was actually a pretty shitty host. Norm was, and still is pretty awesome.

I love shows like that. I have absolutely no experience doing anything that requires actual skill when it comes to handy work, but I really enjoy watching stuff like that for whatever reason.
I spend hours watching guys do woodwork and restoration type projects on YouTube. I find it fascinating and honestly just satisfying to watch.

I enjoy watching this guy's show, if for no other reason than imagining my insurance company laughing their arse off when I ask them to pay for some of the stuff he does...
"waiiiit they're NOT gonna pay for this!!"

Norm is the biggest wood nerd ever and I love it

I feel like Mike Holmes is the last of this breed that is doing television.

They always were able to explain an hour long job in a few minutes. Most YouTube videos turn a minute long job in to an hour video.

You know this old house is still on, right?

I know. I was referring mostly to the way the show ran back then with Norm and Bob and all the contractors. It just seemed to be a lot more information driven than fluff, and I always came away learning tons of new stuff, which in turn inspired me to take on different projects around the house, like replacing facia and soffit, to installing new gypsum, etc, etc. Back before one could turn a computer on or speak into a phone for a YouTube video, this was about as good as it got.

He just seemed like he always tried to rush everyone through everything and didn't really have an actual conversation. I'd bet he was a total arse off set.

Tom is the man.
He is.
Saw a recent episode where Kevin was helping him nail something and Kevin kept missing the nail with the hammer. Tom kept fricking with him about it and calling him sonny.
