The first Miss Universe pageant was held on June 28, 1952, in Long Beach, California
Created by local sponsor Catalina swimwear after the 1950 Miss America winner refused to pose in a company swimsuit.

Lila Lee went way back to the 1910s in film, starting very, very young as a leading lady at Paramount. By the mid-to-late-1920s, she'd developed into a real doll. Looked absolutely lovely in "The Adorable Cheat" and such. She was still busy in early talkies, and I'm particularly fond of the crime film "Those Who Dance" (1930), along with several later poverty-row films she headlined. Age and a habit for drink eventually derailed her career.

She was also in one of the Peter Sellers "Pink Panther" movies from 1963.
When she committed suicide at age 57, she did it to make sure she did it right the first time by jumping out of an 8th floor apartment she was living in at the time.
