Mala Powers
At the age of 16, Powers began working in radio drama, before becoming a film actress in 1950.
At age 19, while on a USO entertainment tour in Korea in 1951, she contracted a blood disease and nearly died. She was treated with chloromycetin, but a severe allergic reaction resulted in the loss of much of her bone marrow. Powers barely survived, and her recovery took nearly nine months

I've always liked Mala Powers, going back to when I first saw the comedy "Geraldine" (1953) on a late-show in the 1970s. Powers was never a prominent star or anything, but made a lot of films in the Fifties. She had a rather vibrant personality, more akin to a 1930s-era actress, as opposed to the often bland 1950s-era glamour-puss types. One of her more memorable roles is as the titled female outlaw in "Rose of Cimarron" (1952). She pops up in a lot of 1960s television shows too.
