Warner Bros. Discovery is shutting down CNN+ and is expected to provide details to staffers Thursday, according to two people familiar with the matter.

Spokespersons for CNN and Warner Bros. Discovery could not be reached for immediate comment.

Warner Bros. Discovery has suspended all external marketing spend for CNN+ and has laid off CNN's longtime chief financial officer as it weighs what to do with the subscription streaming service moving forward, five sources tell Axios.

Why it matters: Inside CNN, executives think the launch has been successful. Discovery executives disagree.

CNN+ has roughly 150,000 subscribers so far.

Warner Bros. Discovery wants to eventually build one giant service around HBO Max.

New leadership has replaced CNN CFO Brad Ferrer with Neil Chugani, Discovery's current CFO for streaming and international, as part of a broader finance team restructuring.

Executives are frustrated that new leadership is moving quickly to dismantle what they see as an eventual lifeline for the cable network.

CNN's original plan was for CNN+ to become profitable in four years by investing $1 billion into the service.

Executives believe that if the service wasn't being knee-capped, its growth rate would've rivaled other print news outlets like The Wall Street Journal and The Washington Post — which have 2.9 million and 2.7 million digital subscribers, respectively.

Idiots. Yes, CNN's ratings are terrible because there was no streaming service option....having a streaming service will fix it all....idiots.

Exec 1: "Guys, people don't like our content, all our hosts are criminals and shady as frick, and it's killing our ratings...I need ideas!"

Exec 2: "Let's take that content, put it in an app, and charge people to watch it."

Exec 1: "BRILLIANT!"

Personally I'm shocked that people don't want to pay to hear Rex Chapman meltdowns or parenting advice from Anderson Cooper

That content is certainly as essential as market guidance and stories from the Wall Street Journal

Kind of sums up all of CNN's problems in a nutshell.

I saw an ad for CNN+ yesterday when I watched the Thor teaser on IMDb yesterday.

I laughed whenever I saw it.

Discovery executives are focused mostly on returning CNN to its journalistic core, a point Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav reiterated in a town hall last week. That includes less of a focus on primetime perspective programming, and more of a focus on hard, breaking news. CNN+ features an array of soft news content, which doesn't align with Discovery's broader vision for CNN.

Let me translate that for you all..."we're seeing that woke, progressive nonsense is not working and people are fed up with it."

Do Axios readers ever feel insulted when they have to have their news source tell them why something matters?

I honestly can't believe 150 people would subscribe to this.

Can we have CNN- now? Where everyone is not quite as deliberate in their lies and propaganda, and only 90% of things are blamed on Trump?

I hope those who were laid off starve to death. Commie supporters don't deserve to live.

It is honestly amazing they even thought this was a good idea.

No one is watching CNN. Their ratings are in the absolute gutter. Why would they think anyone would pay for it?

What they should have done is offer it for free with advertisements before and after programs etc...if they were going to do this nonsense at all.
