Recently went for the first time, saw probably a dozen people miss 2-3x and then start sticking them in the wall repeatedly.

No previous training.

Asked the brother running it and he said he's never seen anyone NOT able to pick it up in a few minutes.

That’s because I haven’t been yet.

I was surprised the first time I went axe throwing that I was shockingly competent at it. Didn’t miss one. I guess just instinct from the past and my geniology.

The way an axe is weighted makes it naturally plant on a throw

I'm going to assume this was NOT in Baton Rouge.
I've been to a gun range in BR before.

Don't bring a snare drum to an axe fight.

Visualizing here…so no matter the angle the ax hits its target with enough angular momentum the head of the ax will flip into the target…even if the butt of the ax handle hits first…the ax head will spin to the target, right?

Because they put the line a rotation away. We have no instincts from throwing axes

To be fair, it looks super easy to figure out, and like a super easy action to repeat.

The heavy end of an axe spends more time in the leading quadrant of the arc it describes. In other words, the centrifugal rotation of a thrown axe is not constant; it speeds up and slows down depending on where the head is. Therefore each throw has a great chance of sticking. Once you’ve stuck it a time or two, you just repeat the force and it will keep sticking.

Is that how Def Leppard got their one armed drummer?

You can be anywhere in Baton Rouge and technically be at a gun range.

People were throwing knives. Spears. Shovels.

I was given a double sided felling axe.

All were easy.

Yeah, it’s way easier than darts for me.
