Lots of Subaru people in here - tell me about your experience with the boxer engines.
I get the concept but the majority of new Subaru SUVs have the 4 cylinder and I'm questioning the power. I'm considering a Subaru for my next vehicle but just unfamiliar with that engine.

AWD any day if you are driving in winter weather. FWD doesn't cut it on hills without studs.
Don't know where some of y'all get this nonsense from. I lived in PA and saw more Subaru's and Jeeps stuck in ditches or crashed into light poles and bus benches than anything else. Drivers overconfident in AWD/4WD, tires and knowing how to drive matters more.

anecdotally only, but in snow areas it’s the tourists in pickups and the locals in Jeeps and suburus
lolwut?
Maybe certain snow areas. Vermont? Anywhere granola is consumed in large quantities?
4x4 trucks rule the roads in WI. Subies are seen in Madison.

I've never had any issues in the snow with a FWD vehicle. The right tires for conditions and proper driving skills will get you through 99% of the time.
RWD is fine in the snow. Especially if you put proper tires on them.
Frankly, I'd rather drive a RWD with Blizzaks in the snow than a FWD with any tires. More control with RWD.
eta-Those that claim AWD is great for in the rain? WTF... AWD is a waste outside of snow/ice/mud. Rain....please

I have 256K miles on a 2015 Outback and it runs like a top. It’s my daily driver between West Monroe and Bossier. 4 cyl, still gets over 30 MPG. Buying a new Forester Wilderness for my wife. Should be here soon.

Say for a small mid size SUV, is the ride upgrade of the AWD worth the little bit more MSRP and sacrificing 2 mpg?
I have an AWD car. Not sure if anyone's told you but you need to rotate your tires every other oil change if not every. You can't just replace two tires on AWD cars....it'll frick up differentials if your tires are run with uneven wear for too long.
My car has 3 differentials. No one told me about the tire situation before I got my car. Had to replace all 4 when the back two had plenty of meat on them....
But I do like knowing I can take my car offroad, in the mud/snow/etc. and it'll drive pretty solidly(pending ride clearance).

Ive gotten it to the habit of rotating tires every tire change but yea typically you change all four tires

I could tell the previous owner didn't. Front tires were pretty bad off and the backs were more than fine.

Seems to be some acronym confusion...
AWD - all wheel drive
FWD - front wheel drive
4WD or 4x4 - four wheel drive
AWD - all wheel drive
FWD - front wheel drive
4WD or 4x4 - four wheel drive

Ours only has like 50k miles so all I can tell you is it's easy to change the oil
They're supposedly extremely reliable long-lived engines.

Would never own a Subaru. I know 3 people that had to have the engines complete rebuilt by the dealer within 2 years.

25 years of real snow and ice driving experience. Owning both a full sized truck and subarus. You know, actually doing the things we are discussing.
AWD > 4WD for driving on the roads. 4WD is better for getting you out of the ditch.

Ah well, hopefully I don't make that list.

I know a lot of people with Subarus and have never heard of this issue.
Transmission, sure.

The late 1990s thru early 2000's had head gasket issues. I got bit by it. Twice. They've since solved it. I still own a tribeca with 130k on it. It will be the kids when he starts to drive.

These are brand new Subarus within the last 3 yrs.

Proper tires and actually knowing how to drive is going to be way more of a factor than drive.
And the awd of your favorite economic crossover or suv is almost certainly going to be 80-100% front wheel biased in all but the most extreme scenarios. If your awd crv actually sends 50% to the rear wheels you are probably already fricked.

Is this actually in the vehicles owner manual? Except for a few particular AWD models this is a myth perpetuated by tire dealers. Since two of your tires still had significant tread compared to the other pair you were driving on tires with different diameters for a significant time without harming the differentials.

Not in my opinion.
BTW - the wife and I drive nearly identical vehicles. Hers is AWD and gets about 21 MPG. Mine is FWD and I average 30 MPG.
