Say for a small mid size SUV, is the ride upgrade of the AWD worth the little bit more MSRP and sacrificing 2 mpg?

After watching people try to drive in winter weather here, yes for me. It is amusing to watch someone try to get up a steep driveway multiple times then give up. Has a lot to do with the tires, too.

Tires matter more those the garbage AWD systems on smaller CUVs.

Depends on where you live. If it's south of I-40...it's not worth it.

ETA: The Cadillac XT6, Chevy Blazer, Honda Pilot, and Acura MDX have a trick AWD system that over drives the rear axle and makes the car handle better. THAT might be worth it if you value that kind of thing. But it seems sort of unnecessary in a family hauler that will be used far away from the snow belt.

AWD any day if you are driving in winter weather. FWD doesn't cut it on hills without studs.

There will be one day 2-3 years from now where you remind yourself that that extra couple of grand was definitely worth it for having AWD

Yes, absolutely if you live somewhere where there are going to be times that you are going to have to get somewhere despite inclement weather.

Does AWD improve driving in rain/puddle conditions? i know tires matter huge here but does AWD do better?

My wife had an AWD Acadia, it was very nice to drive. AWD makes all the difference in the world…

Yes, it does make a difference in the rain…

I like the way the AWD vehicle sticks to the road around turns better when driving fast.

Plus you can turn it on and off if you want to get back that two miles per gallon.

AWD doesn't add enough value over FWD in rain.

On ice and snow, it does. And it can help you get back onto the road when you run off of it in a snow storm. I wouldn't bother with it if you live on the gulf coast. It's a waste of fuel and it's more mechanical parts to maintain and inevitably break.

Never driven on the beach before? Gotta have that AWD or FWD, or you’ll be hoping some Good Samaritans will help push you out.

After spending 7+ hours trying to get home from 12 miles away during Atlanta's snowmageddon in a RWD truck, I decided I'd never again not have AWD/4WD.

Good Samaritan teenagers were jumping in the backs of RWD trucks to help us up hills

A friend of mine has an AWD Suburu, Ive seen him drive through mud in a crop field and just glide across it where I saw trucks stick in the same place.

I'm with the others. Not worth it unless you're going to be driving in really slick conditions. Then, you wouldn't give it up for anything.

I've had one. Far more practical than the overpriced shite Southern people are driving.

what if you know this vehicle will end up being driven by your child? would this feature make you feel better about them handling adverse conditions?

Just be ready for when you have a tire with some sidewall puncture and they tell you you have to buy four tires or it will screw up your drivetrain. Some tire places will make you sign a waiver if you buy only one or even 2 tires.
