Wonder what the median is.

My guess would be less since first and second year analysts probably make up the bulk of the headcount.

Yep. Banks do well in volatile financial markets. No surprise.

Yaron Brooks does a pretty good talk on this. He says most people give a pass on people like pro athletes making an obscene amount of money because we see what they do, they entertain us, and we know how hard it is to do what they do. Bankers are easy to demonize because most people don't understand what they do, or even know what they do. We just see that they have money and assume the got it nefariously.

I have a client that has a daughter that lives in Manhattan. She just sold her 400 square foot studio for around $450,000.

Correct.

Analysts are probably making about a third of that # in a quarter if they're doing well.

Associates are making about 40% or maybe a little more of that #.

It probably deserves to be mentioned that Goldman and their ilk have an extremely flat pyramid and it is uber-competitive to get promoted, and this is, in large part, why. A massively out-sized chunk of that money went to VP's and above.

Or how difficult it is to get hired at the absolute top tier investment banks. It's as competitive as playing pro sports or making the Olympics, and they're often competing against a global pool.

One of my buddies, an Asc2 in their IB energy coverage, banked a 120%

Top bucket across the street is bankrolling this year.

Big freaking deal, I made 125K a year in Dallas years ago as a 20 something single guy and spent it all.

You spend what you make

Could it be possible that they receive an annual bonus sometime in the first quarter that puts a lot of weight on that quarter?

I got last year’s bonus on March 1st (sales job). Entirely possible.

Not even remotely close for the vast majority. A few superstars in client-facing positions do, and that's about it.

Averages are meaningless in a firm like this. Give me the median.

There are so many people there making huge bonuses that it is almost certainly skewing the average.

This is the perfect case where using median would make more sense unless you’re goal is to piss people off which I understand

Same with these idiotic men v women pay gap studies the big banks just put out. Yeah, they pay more money in total to men than women. There are a ton of contextual factors that make it very logical.

OK, now lets do the same for the top folks at Google. It's hilarious that the tech world gets a pass when it comes to the "1%" bullshite.

Agreed

But I doubt the average google employee is hauling in that much in one quarter

There are a lot fewer 8 figure annual comp packages at Google relative to Goldman Sachs.
