I mean if you watch The Big Short even casually it's pretty clear why they get demonized. It's pretty well deserved. And Goldman is notorious. Considering what they've single handedly done to economics in this country, let alone the world, they deserve the scorn.

I'm not saying they're angels, but then again, I won't take Hollywood's interpretation of what goes on as evidence either. It's also ironic that Hollywood wants to demonize the very institutions that allow them to exist in the first place.

Don't let a movie color your perspective. Much of what IBer's do is incredibly boring.

And Goldman is far, far, far from the worst when it comes to nefarious behavior at investment banks.

What have they done to the economics of this country? Be specific.

Excel + PPT for 80 hours/week... riveting stuff.

Have a feeling we won't get anything intelligible.

Not even remotely close for the vast majority. A few superstars in client-facing positions do, and that's about it.

"if they're doing well" being a key qualifier.

I am not sure which associates you've come across, but the ones from my grad school are pulling in about 30% of that # before bonus. I assume with bonus (which, again an assumption, was probably pretty good this past year) it's probably approaching 40% for high performers.

New York bankers prey on people and their business. These small start ups don't have the teams these lenders have. They will frick you and take your business, hoping your are too dumb to notice the shenanigans.

Ehh I work in the industry and dont care if people criticize it, but that movie was an extreme embellishment of everyday personalities. Its a much more subdued environment. Youre working a shite ton of hours, especially when youre younger, and it is actually somewhat boring. Most of corporate life is.

Goldman doesn't want your small business.

I finance LBOs for a living, so I’m curious how you think this happens.

I went through the 10-K of Google and Exxon to draw some comparison, and as far as I can tell, neither list compensation and benefits as a line item like Goldman. Mind you, this it a company the average Joe would suggest is hiding everything from the public, but they're the only one laying out their compensation.

Yeah, I looked at Google too and drew the same conclusion.

I did find some random analysis that stated the “mid career” median salary at Google was $152K a couple years back.

Goldman is really much more transparent than 90+% of companies in their position are. They've received so much bad press over the years that they feel like it's necessary at this point and give a ton of information away publicly.

You sure as shite ain't getting that kind of salary information on McKinsey on Harley Davidson, to name two firms with which I am familiar.

This is a horrible fallacy. Just because the bonus pool rose didn’t mean it’s being distributed across the company.

I just interviewed with Goldman Sachs last week at a major division headquarters and the average worker that I met with certainly wasn’t making 100k,

Best I could find was stock based compensation for 2017 was roughly $100k for Alphabet employees, on average. As for total compensation and benefits, who knows?

I agree an average I'd say terrible way to measure this, but I'm trying to be consistent.

You know you're misguided when you point to Goldman Sachs distributing profits to their executives as an example of corporations distributing profits to people in the middle class.

There’s a few energy IB sweatshops in Houston that give out bonuses that are borderline insane and well beyond the average for any bank on the street.

The shitty part is on an hourly basis all in comp is probably not too far from minimum wage.
