City council members in Austin, Texas, approved a new budget Thursday slashing nearly $150 million from the city's police force.

The council approved the $4.2 billion budget with the cuts to law enforcement funding following months of calls and petitions from community members to stand against police brutality, the Austin American-Statesman reported.

On Wednesday, more than 200 residents signed up to speak while the council convened, voicing support for police budget cuts. Some urged for more significant reductions.

The Austin City Council's decision will divide the cuts into separate reinvestments, taking nearly $21.5 million for immediate investments from three upcoming cadet classes and reducing overtime costs by around $3 million.

A lot of these cities were going to have to make huge cuts anyways. This all just seems like cover for their shite decisions sometimes and they can add it for talking points.

I do enjoy the mathematical symmetry: homicides are up about a third so they are cutting the police budget by about a third.

So a couple of hundred people have voices loud enough to sway the opinion in a city with 1 million people?

Violent crime is spiking so let's slash police departments. The mental gymnastics required to get here makes my head hurt

The politicians love love love this shite.

They can take police money and throw it at pet projects that get them votes.

If crime goes up, they have political cover to tell people "you said to cut police funding."

If crime falls or stays the same, they look like geniuses.

The big question is will police do more with less or say "frick you guys" and stop even trying. I, for one, certainly wouldn't be out proactively seeking situations where I might have to employ force since that is a one-way ticket to doom these days.

"Police need better training so they don't harm people and so they treat everyone equally!!!!!"

Or we could just cut the funding to their training at the earliest phase possible.

The only way this shite should be allowed to pass is if there's a stipulation that no politician who approves the motion is allowed to call the cops and they're also not allowed to pay for private security with public money.

Everyone complaining in this thread does realize almost every public department in the country is heading towards budget cuts because of corona. The math doesn’t add up after shutting down the country. You’ll see cuts in all public services including education soon.
