No cellular and limited power on flip phone. While trying to find gas and talking someone said text is working. Who knew?

That's how it still is after a disaster. On April 27, 2011 all we could get through was an occasional text for a few days. My Mom was out of town and couldn't get in touch with me for my Pops. I finally got a text out hours after the storms had moved past us. She was beside herself.

I remember my friend explaining how it works. We both had Nokias. He texted me while we are standing in a small group in downtown Washington. Proudly hits “send”. Nothing happens.
“What carrier are you with? Oh I guess it only works with AT&T customers”. Turns out ATT had paid extra to be exclusive provider of the new feature.
A month later it was a huge part of my life. Can’t believe we use to call each other to ask short yes/no type questions.

While not an exact comparison, the axiom "necessity is the mother of invention" somewhat applies.
I learned to text on a flip phone because a girl unexpectedly texted me (I don't think I'd ever received a text message before) hinting that she wanted me to go to her house to have sex. I never really had the need or desire to learn how to text...until then!
Luckily I figured it out in enough time.

I wish smart phones never existed

Me too! Not the 29th, but about two days later. We could not get in touch with our employees. Someone suggested texting, and I told him that I didn’t have that feature. He said, “Sure you do.” He took my phone, texted himself and showed me the result. We set to work contacting our employees and had given almost all of them instructions within hours.

It was the first time I played Texas Hold 'em. With the power out yet.
Is anyone else surprised by the low key Katrina coverage on TD?
I figured there'd be at least one stickied thread as well as various lunatics throwing around accusations and conspiracy theories. But it's been pretty snoozeville.

So 2002, maybe 2003-2004. I was working for AWS of Poydras, which was ATT Wireless before ATT bought Cingular and before Cingular bought AWS.
They gave us phones, thinking Nokia 3360s.
They were beta testing texting and gave us the phones to try it out. The general reaction for the entire team was "why the frick would I frick around for 5 minutes with a text (T9) than just calling the person"
I answer maybe 3 calls a month these days.

Not just for disasters, but imagine if Apple had followed thru on its beginning of its multipeer connectivity into communications and pushed more for smartphone ad hoc networks. Close to a decade ago there was talk of them incorporating this fully with WiFi and Bluetooth into its Messaging app (iMessage) to communicate to someone directly or using the ad hoc network and maybe even add later using something like a license free band around 900mhz to extend messaging range.
Apps like Firechat made use of it’s initial multipeer release and then later Android’s capabilities to help people communicate during the 2014 Hong Kong protests off networks monitored by China.
iOS 7 was released 11 years ago, but Apple then kind of limited its own development to direct file sharing with Airdrop and the mesh network capabilities to findmy and added a speed bump to others by including a time limit on ability to make your phone discoverable to everyone for only 10 minutes.
There are still some apps that do this, but if Apple would have included it within Messages/iMessage standard and built it up starting around 2014 to 2016 with ability to turn on the multipeer capabilities when needed or out of range it could have pushed into something used by its regular users and maybe even a standard.
Instead Cook bowed to China and the telecoms and bought back a ton of stock quarterly instead of pushing innovation with its cash on hand.

The Multipeer Connectivity Framework enables users to flexibly use WiFi and Bluetooth peer-to-peer connections to chat and share photos even without an Internet connection. Big deal, right?
But here’s the really big deal — it can enable two users to chat not only without an Internet connection, but also when they are far beyond WiFi and Bluetooth range from each other — connected with a chain of peer-to-peer users between one user and a far-away Internet connection.
It’s called wireless mesh networking. And Apple has mainstreamed it in iOS 7. It’s going to change everything. Here’s why.
It can also extend an Internet connect to a place where none exists — for example, to a hotel basement, cave or to rural areas where cell tower connections are non-existent.
It does that through the mesh networking capability inherent in the Multipeer Connectivity Framework. With multiple users in the area, FireChat can relay messages just like the internet does, from node to node (phone to phone).

No shite, the first cell phone I got, I didn't know it could do anything but phone calls until someone texted me.

I remember receiving these Nintendo like alerts on my phone, and I was like wtf is that? Then I received and understood it. It feels like Katrina made text messaging mainstream. I never used or received anything g before Katrina.

I was at the State Emergency Management HQ and a military reserve employee of the LA Office of Homeland Security showed me how to text that day. Of course, most of the people I needed to communicate with had never texted either.

First text I ever received from my father "It's biblical, bring beer."
I evacuated with my young family while he and mom did not.
