Three state employees took $98,507 from the Office of Motor Vehicles for personal use between March and June 2017, according to an audit released by the Louisiana Legislative Auditor this morning.

quote:

The audit says the employees were fired from the OMV and arrested last year for the theft of the OMV’s petty cash, deposits and license reinstatement transactions. The employees’ names were not listed.

quote:

The OMV also cites old computer software and money handling policies as factors that could have made the thefts possible. This is the third time in four years the OMV has had problems with misappropriation of funds.

This really just being released? Some kind of public records search for things type of thing that took this long?

This right here. When I first moved out of Louisiana, I was shocked that I could get a new Drivers License in under 20 minutes.

One of the worst run organizations in Louisiana. The level of incompetence across the board is astounding to me. Nothing more infuriating than an automated service saying they’re too busy and abruptly hanging up on you after 45min on hold.

For all you know, they were fired last December. And yes, the nature of this work is very time consuming and takes a long time. Depending on how detailed the records are and how organized they are, audits take a really long time. I’ve worked on some that take over a year.

Shocked not shocked.

OMV either requires cash or heavily encourages it the last few times I went there.

State funds were used to pay for a $1,500 sponsorship to the Louisiana Legislative Black Caucus Foundation – 2016 Bayou Classic Scholarship Jazz Brunch. LHSC purchased 10 tickets to the brunch; however, DPS Internal Audit could not account for eight of the tickets. Louisiana Constitution Article VII, Section 14 states that funds, credit, property, or things of value of the state or of any political subdivision shall not be loaned, pledged, or donated to or for any person, association, or corporation, public or private.

This is fricking absurd.

LHSC personnel used the LaCarte card to purchase a music streaming plan for $199 to download music for use in videos to promote highway safety. However, current personnel are unable to access the plan or determine if it was used for the stated purpose.

It's pretty clear that if there is enough money to be stolen, then these departments are overfunded. First step should be an immediate reduction in the budget by the amount stolen or misappropriated.
