On 4 January 1989, while flying from John F. Kennedy during a routine patrol over the Gulf of Sidra, two VF-32 F-14s intercepted two Libyan MiG-23 Floggers, which had originated from the Al Bumbai airfield in Tobruk. After attempting a peaceful intercept, the F-14s used their Television Camera System (TCS) to verify that the MiGs were armed. Hostile intent was declared and the aircraft were cleared to engage. The lead fired an AIM-7 Sparrow, which failed to track. His wingman also fired an AIM-7, which tracked and destroyed one of the MiGs, its pilot ejecting. The first F-14 then closed to AIM-9 Sidewinder range and downed the remaining MiG-23, whose pilot also ejected. The squadron returned to Virginia in February 1989.

video of jets is off - shows two misses. They did paint flogger's on both gypsy tomcats but later took them off.

VF-84 paint was legendary and easily recognized. All of the early tomcat squadron paint schemes were pretty cool. They became too much work to keep them looking good and the Navy eventually adopted the plain, ugly, flat gray paint scheme on all deployed aircraft.

I thought this was going to be the infamous intercept where the American jets approached unnoticed by the two bogeys, got their attention and said "Yea... y'all should probably just go home."
Could have been Iranian pilots instead of Libyan though.
ETA: found it. F-22 vs F-4 phantoms

Fun fact for me, as a Navy vet who worked a different flight deck during that incident. Gypsy’s 202 pilot (Cmdr Cook)’s daughter was my primary care physician. I asked her what it was like having a hero for father, she said, “he’s just dad.”

They had a much better chance than the fitters the tomcats splashed in 81

$1242 in my household for the f22. Sleeping well tonight and thinking of money well spent knowing we own the air nearby and around the continental US

We should’ve firebombed Libya for the inconvenience
