Today the city itself is less than 200,000 people and is 68% black. The metropolitan area is 1.1M people. The percentage of the city that is black is, interestingly, shrinking after about six consecutive decades of increase; conversely, the share of the city that is white is increasing for the first time in about six decades. That is because the parts of town that are actually attracting and keeping people (Highlands, Crestwood, Avondale, Forest Park, etc.) are largely white while the northern, northeastern, and western parts of the city are emptying out.

I did not realize that and to confirm, I found an article in the Birmingham Times after the 2020 census.

“Birmingham’s Black population shrank by around 18,500 people between 2010 and 2020. That’s a loss of around 12%, a huge decrease for a city that is home to nearly 137,000 Black residents. For comparison, Birmingham’s total population fell by about 5% during that time, and the city’s white population grew by about 3%.

In 2010, 73% of Birmingham’s population identified as Black. In 2020, that number had fallen to 68%.”

There’s been a dream among some lawmakers in the OTM communities to form “Cahaba County.” It would basically be the suburbs forming their own county so they aren’t at the mercy of deep blue (and corrupt) JeffCo courts and control. It will never be talked about publicly because it would be branded as racist, but it’s discussed. Just look at the news about the JeffCo Probate Judge. Straight hoodrat.

Bham Metro has too many municipalities, but there’s no putting the toothpaste back in that tube. Truth be told, West Homewood should join Bham.

The city of Birmingham is a sinking ship. The suburbs there are fine

Not sinkling as fast as it once was, and I'm not sure it's still sinking.

Could you imagine the City of Birmingham controlling Mountain Brook, Homewood, Vestavia Hills, Hoover, Trussville, etc.?

We love going to Birmingham and considered retiring there. We stay around UAB or Five Points / SoHo. Great city, parks, food scenes and concerts.

It’s got a good future.

There is a less than zero chance that Mountain Brook, Vestavia Hills, Homewood, and especially Hoover would ever allow this to happen. Any politician who even thought this was a good idea would be a former politician so fast it would make your head spin.

Birmingham as a city is somewhere between Memphis and Little Rock on the shitty city scale.

That is my thought. It’s been a hot minute since I lived there, but those are all great places and would not allow being swallowed into B’ham. I’m reading B’ham is having some improvement. Hopefully, it continues. It is so beautiful over there, I’ll give it that.
