Next time drive up to Chattanooga and through the Ocoee to get to NC. A little further of a drive depending on where you’re going, but much more enjoyable.

Bigger concern should be that he doesn't suddenly want to become a girl with all the brainwashing going on these days.

When I was in college every AA and I mean literally every single one I worked with was trying to move to Atlanta when they graduated. They couldn’t graduate fast enough so they could move there.

agreed - it’s what we normally do, but Mrs L was anxious to see the boy and did not want to add an hour to the drive
In this trip, our son’s camp was in Winston Salem, so we would have had to drive to Knoxville and kick over on I 40 - an extra 57 miles and at least a full hour longer
Driving home, wanted to get home fast, and driving through Atlanta is usually not bad on weekends and later at night

Sounds like any large city in the US.
You failed to mention what time of day you passed through. If you pass through super late at night or super early in the morning you’ll have zero issues. Why call 911? Mind your business and keep it moving.
I could see this exact situation play out in Houston Dallas Austin and New Orleans. Not unique to ATL. I also wouldn’t drive thru the heart of any city. I’ll go 30+ mins out of my way to avoid driving thru the heart of any city. Give me two lane highways on the out skirts all day. You don’t HAVE to stay on the route the map gives you.

Those homeless are always panhandling there at the exit from 20 going onto 75/85 North. You can even see them on some of the historical street views. Makes me want to take 285 when heading towards the Carolinas from Alabama.

Birmingham is a dying city that is losing population. How many Fortune 500 companies does Birmingham have? Atlanta and Birmingham are going two totally different directions and have been for almost 20 years now.

Why call 911?
I call 911 once or twice every few months - not often, but every time I see something worth mentioning
I do outside sales and log more highway/road miles than 90% of Americans (police and truck driver have me beat, but not many others)
Any time I see something blocking a lane on the interstate, or a vehicle fire or something like that
a lane or exit blocked on a busy interstate IS possibly life threatening/dangerous and absolutely 911 worthy

I mean, this is what I always do if I’m not in a hurry - this trip was planned with Atlanta traffic patterns in mind, and we did not have really any trouble or much traffic
But I was saddened and shocked to see tent cities right by where my dad used to park for Falcon’s games
Also, barriers to the interstate ramp should be more than 2’ tall
Panhandlers approaching cars on the interstate is pretty bad
I remember a panhandler from the 90’s that everyone loved
He sat on the street right where you get off for GA Tech/The Varsity (10th - 14th street exit off the 75/85 connector southbound)
He held up a GREAT sign
“Why lie? I need a beer!”
I gave that sumbich a dollar EVERY TIME I got off that exit - he even had an article written about him in the AJC
getting on the fricking interstate and looking like death is a whole different ballgame

Don’t go to many big cities huh? Bet it was scary for you.

There are some kernels of truth here, although Bham is by no means a dying city when the suburbs are considered. But the real impact of these differences is that the Bham area is a great place to live with outstanding suburban school systems, police departments, etc. Atlanta is becoming an unlivable shitehole just like many other large US cities. The quality of life in places like Buckhead is nowhere near what it was 20 years ago. And things continue to get worse.

there are tent cities rivaling LA and San Francisco through out downtown Atlanta which is really sad.
Do what?
Yes,there are homeless enclaves (mainly
around underpasses and bridges) but it's nowhere close to the out of control homeless situations in LA and SF.

Compare these things for city of Atlanta and city of Birmingham
Fortune 500 companies
Homicide rate
Demographics and demographic shift in last 20 years
It’s clear which city is the shithole and it isn’t Atlanta. Birmingham is a dying decaying city that is losing population. There is the definition of a city on the decline.

Kemp should step up and handle this situation, especially since it is now affecting traffic/commerce on the interstate
Now is the time to stop it, and a strong leader with courage could do it

Census: No more Black majority in Atlanta
ATLANTA — Atlanta’s African American majority went away in the last 10 years, according to new census data analyzed by the AJC.
The new census data does show that African Americans are still the largest ethnic group in Atlanta, but they dropped below 50% in the 2020 Census.
In 2019, the U.S. Census reported that 51% of Atlanta’s residents were Black. However, the new data shows that number dropped to 47% in 2020.

Again, you want to cherry pick the city limits of Bham and just ignore the surrounding suburbs which are separate cities. Many in Atlanta would love to have what we have, hence the failed attempt by Buckhead to split off. By all means, enjoy your large urban city and everything that brings you.

Why are you trying to compare the Birmingham suburbs to the city of Atlanta?
The area being discussed is in the city so there’s no reason to compare it to Birmingham suburbs. There isn’t any difference between Atlanta suburbs and Birmingham suburbs. There’s a huge difference between the city of Atlanta and city of Birmingham. One is thriving the other is literally dying.
