I am a parent. I could never see myself doing this. Hell, I watch him as I am driving through one of those mirrors to see what he is doing.

Let me guess. You are not a parent either. A working parent most definitely has a routine in the morning

Of course not, but negligence isn't always intentional. In fact, most times it's not. But that doesn't excuse it.
Did you read the article?
If so, what would you deem proper punishment on the man?
He'll probably blow his brains out before court anyways.. I would if I accidentally did that to my child.

I don't think any parent could see themselves doing it...
...but it still happens

I'm sorry. I don't consider taking care of my child a part of my "routine". They're not part of a check list. If I'm lumping in caring for my child with taking out the trash and making sure the coffee pot is off, then I probably shouldn't be a parent.
It's an issue of priorities, really. Are your kids priority #1 when they are in your care? If they are, then the fact that you have a meeting today should not be taking precedent over your 6 month old you are bringing to daycare. When you drop them off, feel free to change your focus. Etc, etc.
If you are incapable of putting them first, just say so...but don't blame being busy. We're all busy. All it takes is a little effort to prevent this needless "accident." Looking for excuses ahead of time seems like a recipe for disaster.

Sorry, these people are grossly negligent and no, this could not happen to anyone and it is very rare
The fact that it is a rare occurrence doesn't change the fact that it could still happen to anyone.
Dick cancer is rare but it can still happen to anyone anyone with a dick. Leaving a a child in a car is rare but it can still happen to anyone anyone with a child.

Yes, because you didn't remember the alarm this morning because your mom called to let you know your dad's CT scan came back while on your way out the door and usually your wife leaves after you do for the day but she had to meet with one of the teachers for your other kids.
It doesn't just happen on it's own.

Prosecution, hear him tell the court he has no will to live, suspended sentence and community service with the court telling him he can still find purpose after this and best of luck doing so.

One is entirely within your control and one isn't. I'm not downplaying that shite happens, but it's not the best analogy.

Everyone has a routine, not just parents.
I hope to never see you judging heroin addicts again, as I am sure you were not ever hooked on smack.

I really cannot understand how this happens. Could have something to do with priorities.

You sound like the typical internet persona of perfection. Anytime a situation is posted, you know what the exact right way to act, think, speak is, so you take that position as the 100% guaranteed way you would always handle the position. And you'll be damned sure not to admit the potential for slipping. Adding the straw man of someone literally comparing taking your baby out of a car seat to turning your home alarm on is also predictable.
Let me ask you, though, did you read any books or take any classes to prepare for having a child? I assume not, since you seem to have it all figured out as a birth right, but maybe I'll be surprised.
If you did, think how many times the word routine was used. Did that upset you, since you seem to be insulted at the thought of your child as part of a routine?

Wait...what?
I can prevent leaving my child in the car by simply remembering they are in the car. Can I prevent dick cancer by simply remembering I have a dick?
Good grief...this is ENTIRELY preventable. 100% success rate by simply paying attention and doing Job #1 as the child's parent.

Sure it does. Well-rounded folks would have an ah-ha moment somewhere in that day. I can understand the initial negligence, but eight hours is a sign of a poor parent.
My mom forgot my twelfth birthday, she remembered by noon.

Forgetting a child in the back seat of a hot, parked car is a horrifying, inexcusable mistake. But is it a crime?
Bet he didn't forget his fricking cell phone though.
Not sure what punishment there should be for this a-hole.

A slap on the wrist, then?

Agree on the priorities. I have a grown daughter whose children were never her priority. Maybe her brain was wired wrong, dunno!

100% of people make careless mistakes
some careless mistakes are just more horrific than others

It just depends. I don't know how I'd handle it (and I don't know what the laws require in each instance). I'm an attorney but I don't practice criminal law.
Anyway, he's going lose his job likely, maybe his wife. He'll be arrested, get a felony record, pay lots of money to lawyers and the court, and spend a couple thousand hours working in the community.
That may be sufficient for someone on the edge of suicide, but I'm open to suggestions or critiques.
