While I'm not trying to connect the two. I don't find the Church of Satan all that offensive or troubling. The documentary did highlight how most of the people who join them are looking for some sense of community/friendship. With that being said, some of the folks that join that group clearly go overboard and have an agenda (The chick who led the Detriot chapter).

oh I don't either

just that they are pretty aggressive with their trolling, while most atheist "churches" generally lay pretty low

Ricky Gervais said it best:

His next argument is that people typically believe the God that they are taught in their surrounding culture: Americans are typically Christian, Indians are typically Hindu, and Pakistanis are typically Muslim. “Isn’t that lucky? I was born into the right god. Everyone else is going to hell.”

This is spot on in my opinion. I am agnostic for the record and I love Christmas. Best time of the year!

Do they just go along with it because it is a fake holiday for them and they can give/receive gifts and great deals, and Christmas bonuses? Or do they actually celebrate the birth of Jesus?

Sorry you don't do history.

You think Christians invented Christmas? Just about every story by Christians was stolen or adapted from earlier cultures and religions. Pretty much all religions had built on one another starting all the way from Pagan times and animal and Earth worship.

Yule, Saturnalia and Sol Invictus. All 'Christmas' celebrations before Christians. All the iconology associated with Christmas also comes from earlier celebrations.

You can believe what you want when you go to your house of worship but the information is in the history books and you can deny reality all you want but you can't change it.

I mean they aren't really they just don't agree with one religion being placed above others and point out the hypocrisy of it. They kicked out that one lady who was begin overly aggressive because that isn't what they are about.

Well I mean Christmas is really based on the pagan holiday of Yule, so it's not just a Christian holiday. Good question though.

What about Easter? Do any of you atheists celebrate Easter?

Name one time they trolled out of the thin blue air for no reason. They are trolling hardcore Christians who are trying to eliminate the Church/State line.

I enjoy getting a day off of work and spending time with family... but I don't celebrate any of the religious aspect.

I'm sure once my son is old enough we'll do Easter egg hunts. I always did growing up.

I think it is ok. I love German Pfeffernusse cookies, and I'm English by heritage. That DNA Kit said so.

Right. I'm aware. And sometimes its funny. Sometimes it just comes off as petty.

My point in all of this was to separate the CoS from atheist groups. They are not the same.

I can't think of one. But it's pretty clear that Lucien Greaves is into this to get a rise out of people.

When Christians are fighting in line at Target on Black Friday, are they really celebrating the true meaning of Christmas? Or are they just taking advantage of the holiday?

But is it really the birth of Jesus or did Christians just hijack the date of the pagan feast of Yule, closely following the winter solstice a few days prior?? So, really, atheists (which I am not one) are just participating in the silly bullshite of gift giving.
