About a week after I got it if I am not improving and the snot/mucus is coming out green.

Since I had my deviated septum fixed/turbinates enlarged, I mostly just need to sinus rinse nightly and I haven't had to get antibiotics lately.

Just wait it out and treat the symptoms. Would think it's very rare to have a sinus infection caused by bacteria. People here likely taking z packs for no reason. That being said a doctor will likely keep taking your money if you keep going.

It's not even a great antibiotic for sinus infections. Should be going for amoxicillin/augmentin. Most of these people should just be given a placebo and be told it's a z pack.

When I was younger, I would power through these minor sinus, upper respiratory infections, even bronchitis, walking pneumonia for weeks before seeking medical treatment.

Now that I'm older, I tend to be less hesitant especially if treatment is as easy as getting a Z-pak.

There is a point where symptoms get worse and its worth seeing a doc, especially upper chest stuff.

That said I had a few horrible sinus infections about 12-15 years ago that I treated symptoms with basic OTC meds. Got through it and haven't had one since.

Not bad advice from armchair docs in the OT.

quote:

If your symptoms haven't resolved, or are starting to resolve, after 5-7 days since initial.

It's rare, but possible, that one could have a growth in the sinus, benign polyp or papilloma or even a malignant tumor, so if symptoms linger more than few weeks, not a bad idea to let one of those guys with "degrees" take a look.

quote:

He told me that getting steriods that often affects your joints in a very negitive way, when you're older.

Probably referring to risk of aseptic (avascular) necrosis of the (usually) hip, (think Bo Jackson) with corticosteroid (not anabolic) use-rare, but not pleasant if it's you (or loved one).

People shpuld know for Sinus & ear infections Zpak have no clinical impact.
Pfizer did a great job selling a 3 or 5 day pak...if you look at clinical data a Z pak for H Flu or Strep Pneu (the 2 leading bacteria) has basically zero clinical benefit. Its a bacterstatic meaning it prevents spread vs bactercial cidal which kills tze pathogen.

I do nothing, unless the throat gets very painful or I blow significant amount of blood.

These things usually start out as a virus or allergies. If they go past 10 days it’s reasonable to ask for antibiotics, or if you have emphysema or severe asthma or something else that would out you at high risk.

I avoid antibiotics unless it’s severe. I want them to work when i’m old and really need them, instead of developing allergies or resistance.

Came back to add i have met a few people who thought they had chronic bacterial sinusitis. Turned out they had a giant fungus ball in their sinuses and the antibiotics they were taking for years were like giving it fertilizer.

Nope.

I used to get major sinus infections several times a year that would last days or even a week. Lots of pressure, and couldn’t breathe through my nose at all. This started when I was a very young child and lasted until I was in my late 30’s when I started taking a daily antihistamine.

Before, I would only take an antihistamine when the symptoms started. That never worked at all. That would not provide any relief at all.

Used to go to doctor once a month for sinus infection and get antibiotics. Stopped going to the doctor and take Sudafed 12 hr. Now i only get a sinus infection once a year.

If it is still feeling bad, and worse, just go to the doctor or do telehealth. Might be time for antiobiotics.

99% of “sinus infections” are viral, and don’t need antibiotics. Of course when people get a steroid they feel better, but this also isn’t indicated and can do harm.

The only consideration for “secondary infection” could be if symptoms got better and then got worse again day 7-10

I've had a "runny" nose for forty years. Never not. If I get congested with a low grade fever I go to doc. If I don't it doesn't get better. I have learned however, to stop taking sinus/allergy/cold meds after about 3 days because the crap just gets backed up "in a ball" (feels like), if I dont. Also, i take sinus med before I mow.

All started when I worked at a hospital in Sterlington across from the ammonia plant (the one that blew up). Dang fumes must have ruined my sinuses.

Do your own research but most sinus infections are not bacterial. They’re finding fungus is a much more common reason and if you give antibiotics which is fungus to a fungus you get worse. Probably why people have chronic sinus infections. However, they don’t teach doctors this or they’re afraid of lawsuits if they don’t give you the antibiotic.

A few years ago I had a sinus infection that wouldn't go away. After a couple of weeks with a constant sinus headache I went to Urgent Care. They gave me a steroid shot and sent me home. Felt great for a week then it came back.

I went back and they gave me another steroid shot and an antibiotic. My ankle and knee joints hurt so bad right after that. To the point that walking through the airport it was difficult to keep up with my group. It was like having slightly sprained knees and ankles...plural.

After a week that started to improve and took a good month or two to finally go completely away. I found out after that it is a know reaction to that steroid/antibiotic combo. I don't remember what they were specifically but I would at least google it before taking any combo of those drugs. But the sinus infection never came back so that was good. Having a headache for almost a month was worse than the joint pain.
