At what point do you call 911? When is it frivolous to call 911?

I was at a bar tonight talking with some people. All the sudden we start hearing screaming and shite that this dude had passed out and was choking. We see this dude on the ground who ain’t looking well and looks unconscious. Call 911 and explain the situation st the same time as the bouncer. As I finish the conversation, the sick man comes to and says he just wants to go home and tried to leave.
The fire department come s and does some tests and lets him go.

But I can’t help but wonder.... should I have called 911? At what point do you know you need to. I certainly thought I did tonight, but I guess not.

I'd have called in this situation. Better safe than sorry.

Right..... but then he appears perfectly fine. I talked with the bouncer and the bouncer didn’t think it was s big deal that he looked unconscious. He said that happens and that s lot of the times they are t. He said the guy looked purple.

My main think is the ambulance and the firefighters show up and the guy is just waiting for them on the side of the street like “I’m perfectly fine”....

It just feels super weird.

I asked other people at the bar and I got mixed answers

Always call no matter what. I found a guy bad off outside a bar during Mardi gras a few years ago and called 911. Waiting for them to show up and they said I might have saved his life. He had friends inside the bar and they told me the next day he had alcohol poising but will make a full recovery.

Fire, police, and EMS cannot force anyone to go to the hospital (unless they determine the person cannot make a clear decision themself or being arrested).
I would call 911, better safe than sorry. Something as simple as a defibrillator can save someone’s life.

If you find someone unconscious/unresponsive you should always call. Even if they come to right after. They can refuse the 5k ride in the ambulance if they want to but if you sit there and don’t call and they never come to, well that’ll stay on your mind for a long time.

People come to the ER for stupid shite all the time, if someone is unconscious at any point, I don’t think it’s a bad idea to get medically cleared before just going about their way.

Would you rather feel a bit unsure the next day, or left forever knowing you watched a man die?

You mean he appears to be suffering from one possible sign of choking? Sounds like your bouncer is a bouncer for a reason.

He said the guy looked purple.

Hmmm.....still sounds like choking.

It happens. I’ve seen a person get hit by a car and be unable to move one minute, then by the time the medics arrive, they’re up and about and refusing medical treatment (like idiots). Thing is, you don’t ever know. All you had to go on was the guy appeared to lose consciousness, he was turning purple and someone with him screamed that he was choking. Based on those details, I’d have called 911, too. And just because he came to before they got there doesn’t mean he’s “ok.” He could have hit his head passing out and have a more serious injury that should be checked out, but far too often people get embarrassed and just want to leave the scene.

I’d be a lot more concerned had you whipped out your phone to take a video. You did the right thing.

Without a doubt call...

I see scenarios like this almost weekly. Person falls, + LOC, wakes up. They see me either by EMS or later that day, get a CT Head and they have a subarachnoid or subdural bleed. In worse case person falls and losses consciousness, wakes up and within 30min/ 1 hour passes out again to never regain consciousness and ultimately dies from an epidural bleed.

Guy could have easily aspirated, became syncopal, fell and hit his head.

Was this your first time calling?

There is NO reason to get PTSD from calling 911

When I was young, adults would scare the shite out of us when talking about how serious 911 is. They acted like we better be getting murdered before we ever dare to dial it. I think it created a generation of people scared to death to call the police.

You call man. Especially not knowing any back story. I know two people who died this past year because they choked on their vomit. It was not just from drinking, but still. If other steps would have been taken I believe they would still be with us right now.

Surprised no one has mentioned this on today of all days.

People who think they are about to OD on weed that call 911 dont think its frivolous at the time

Well, I also almost called 911 the other day because it looked like this homeless man was assuring a woman in the middle of a busy street. Their argument escalated and he wrapped her up and I was just about to call and go over there and stop it and then they walked into a movie theater..... wtf.

I also had a dream about calling 911 a few days ago too.
