would some appreciation be out of the question?
I repeat this story from my childhood - one that has had the most significant impact on my personality for the past 80 years.
In the early 40s, we lived in Leesville right by the railroad tracks. Hoboes were a frequent sight - (in later years, I have learned that hoboes had places 'marked' for being a good spot to petition)
My mother would always prepare them a meal - but there were conditions - while she prepared them something to eat they had to perform some 'work' - usually a rather meaningless task, and usually something that was something I could do.
After a few years, I asked her why she made them do the 'work' because it was something I was probably going to do anyway. - Her response stuck with me throughout my life.
"They do some work, they feel better about themselves."
The nation was full of strong and compassionate people at the end of the Great Depression. Life was hard - people were good.
I hope it doesn't take another depression of that magnitude to heal the democrat-inspired sickness that has infected the nation for the past 60 years, starting with LBJ and accelerated by Obama and brought to the brink of absolute destruction with the Biden administration.

Not only asking strangers for $$$, but getting upset when told no!

as long as people are stupid enough to give out money for free, they will keep begging.

Last winter We had two 40"+ snowstorms in consecutive weekends. I was digging my car out at 3a one morning and three bums walked by (younger, late 20s or 30s) asking for money.
I told them if they helped dig the car out, I'd give them $20 ea (maybe 15 min work tops with that many) and they declined.
I'm not working so these people dont have to work...

I have clients I've represented and ceased representation of many years ago that will call me and ask for a few hundred for Christmas, bills, funerals, etc.
I could understand if it was for a donation/solication, but they have no shame.

If you have the ability to receive a venmo or cashapp on a working phone you aren't destitute. A guy living under the interstate should be a cash only operation.

How old are you?

Actually, our system of government largely depends on asking strangers for money. How do you think that politicians raise money for their campaigns? In large part, the most successful and powerful politicians are the ones that are best at asking strangers for money.
All of which says a lot about why things are so screwed up.

You see people having links for their venmo and cashapp all over the place. Im getting older, but it seems like people used to have a little more pride and didnt ask for money, unless they really needed it. Even then, some of them had a little too much pride to ask.
When the government began instructing social workers to put a positive spin on food stamps, and then when food stamps moved to EBT cards which looked more like normal credit cards.
