At What Age Would You Refuse Cancer Treatment?

The Ben Coleman thing got me to thinking. I am not sure how old he is (30's?), but I know he's went through hell with his cancer. It seems the docs recently told him he's terminal and doesn't have long left. (Poli board has a thread about it). Really sad story that I don't even like to think about.

But it got me to thinking about cancer in general. I know a guy in his mid 60's who recently got cancer, went through a round of chemo and later refused anymore treatment. He said "just give me some pain meds and I'll slip out quietly." The docs told him he still had a chance if he took more treatments and he still said no. Took him a few months, but he just laid around getting high off morphine until he passed.

I am in my 40's and I am refusing any treatments if I get any serious form of cancer. I have no kids and not much going on, so I will just take my morphine and bow out. Of course, everyone's life circumstances are different.

At what age would you do the same?

It all depends on the cancer and situation

Stage 4 pancreatic cancer? Just give me a morphine drip and a priest.

A squamous cell skin cancer? Cut it off and lets ride

At some point the chemo will kill you faster than the cancer

Depends on type and stage. Age isn't a factor

My dad always said the cancer doesn’t kill you, the treatment does. Be dam if it didn’t happen just like he said after he got lung cancer.

Any age. Cancer sucks but chemo sucks worse.

That’s what happened to my grandpa. Battled cancer for years. Never seen him look as bad as he did going through chemo. It eventually killed him. Just took the strength out of his body, and he couldn’t fight it anymore.

Radiation for lung cancer also kills.

My Father died after several months of misery of "treatment".
The following year, a close friend of my Mother and a first cousin of my Mother both were diagnosed with Lung Cancer. They were in their mid 70s; both declined treatment.

350 yrs old.

Seriously, I think that's something that all depends on the person. Everyone has their own value of their time in the future.

I know a couple of people well over 70 who are/have undergone treatment and done great. It would depend on the circumstances.

My dad’s 72 and fighting through it but he’s losing the fight. I think he would be willing to give up but couldn’t do that to me and my mom.

If I was 67 and had been ill for three years, prolly refuse then.

If I was 93 and having a good run with wife and family with me, I’d treat aggressively.

My great uncle made it to 103.

It depends on quite a few factors. Don't give up at 40 though.

Ive got CLL and haven't had treatment yet. It's probably in the near future. I think the idea of chemo scares me more than the disease.

I'll do it, if it's in the next few years, but I know it will change me

Just depends in the type, location and can I have a reasonable quality of life if I make it through.

They've come a long way with treatment. Will only get better after they broke the human genome code.

Agreed. If it’s end stage when they find it not much reason to put oneself through chemo

I've had a sad situation with this and my uncle. Had thyroid cancer. Was going through treatment but was killing him. And he didn't want the financial burden. I saw him near the end, guy was skin and bones, hurt to just sit down. Was on a liquid diet.

Well one day he was just gone. I think he dug a grave and just offed himself somewhere in MS. Couldn't take it anymore.

it just seems as though cancer is a relentless disease. just when you think you've got it beat, it returns.
