Coordinated kid, tall and fast...can throw and catch, swings a bat well...

I'm sure there are travel baseball leagues around, so I'd expect the young baseball players are more advanced than the young football players. There is a football league, but it's a short season so I can't imagine the kids get to Jr high too advanced.

Just trying to get a feel for a cutoff age to start these two sports and be able to letter in high school.

Baseball should start young as possible, outside of pitching too hard and throwing curveballs what's the down side to starting young?

Football all depends on athleticism. Tons of athletes start football in High school and get scholarships to college.

I'd literally rather my entire family get leprosy than ever put my child in travel baseball.

Not sure about baseball, but a friend of mine who played at Alabama wouldn’t let his kids play football (well he let them play flag football) until 7th grade. He had them run track. He said there wasn’t any benefit to having them play peewee football where some dude who just got off work at the plant is teaching them all kinds of messed up techniques, but that track would benefit them more as far as conditioning and speed.

Two of his three sons played in college and played a couple of years in the NFL as undrafted free agents.

I don't understand this question. like what year should they start, or what year in high school can they contribute? I started baseball at 4 years old. Lettered sophomore year. know guys who lettered freshman year. know guys in middle school who we thought were a lock to make it to the majors who never stepped foot on a high school field. I never played travel ball or anything. And I frankly sucked through my junior year, but was 1st team all region my senior year when I really hit my stride.

Point is, kids and sports are a crapshoot. there's no special formula. There's nothing to say that if they aren't amazing when 8 y/o that they won't get good. And nothing that says that because they are good at 8, that they will be in high school. Let them play while they love it and teach them the right way to do it. It's all you can do. I get annoyed listening to friends and relatives judge what their kids high school future will be based off his travel team results....

Really. Why not just pack the kids off like communists would have to special "schools" where the only thing they really do is play baseball.

depends on the kid. i started T-ball at 4/5 played YMCA/BREC through 8th grade, and lettered 3 years in high school. no travel ball. Played Legion Ball in the summers in high school with my high school teammates.

But that was nearly 30 years ago....

Jr high seems like a good start for football...or a season before to acclimated to the lingo. My son'll start all-boys school in 7th grade, probably a good time to start taking hits.

The only advantage a kid who starts football before 12 has is understanding terminology and where to line up. Athleticism wins in jr high, high school is a combination of awareness and athleticism...or sometimes simply size.

Football before 12 is a clusterfrick.

Baseball is a little more complicated; so much going on it helps to start early just to understand the game. But the demands of travel ball are never worth it IMO. Maybe if you have just one kid.

Well that plant guy is making an impact on the other kids and not just his. Can't shame the plant guy for doing his part and giving back. Some people have a terrible way of looking at situations

Depends on natural talent.

Kid runs a 4.5 or better and over 6'? He could start varsity in his first year in high school.

I started my kid in youth football at 6 I think. It was kinda the thing to do since all the kids where I live kinda transitioned at that age from baseball right into football in our little community leagues. The kids that excelled at baseball generally picked it and stuck with it as they got older as the select ball cut into playing football. The football kids generally progressed into having zero issues with being productive in middle school and obviously high school. However, there are plenty of kids that don't pick up football till middle school and do just fine when they get into high school. In fact, with what we know now about head injuries and such with football contact, I am not sure if that isn't the best approach for kids getting into football.

My son started going to all the high school football games this year, he's a 5th grader, and he loves it. Says no doubt he'll play. He's a good place kicker, but I don't think he's willing to put all his eggs in one basket.

His friends are playing football now and he feels left out. We're neck deep in club soccer though.

Both of those sports you listed are dangerous and toxicly masculine. Has your boy considered sport such as chess or ballet?

Football? Plenty start freshman year and become varsity starters. It's all about size and athleticism (unless they are trying to be a qb).

Baseball requires a lot of skill. I'd say you want a kid playing by 10 years old if they want to play in high school.
