Astronomers spot one of the oldest stars in the entire universe

One of the oldest stars in the universe is quietly hiding out in the Milky Way some 2,000 light-years from Earth.
According to a new study published in The Astrophysical Journal, the tiny, 13.5-billion-year-old red dwarf contains barely any heavy elements at all, suggesting it formed out of a nearly pristine cloud of material leftover from shortly after the Big Bang. Furthermore, because the small star is just one-seventh the mass of the Sun and is made of primordial matter, it’s making astronomers reconsider the demographics of the very first stars.
The first stars to form in the universe likely flicked on around 200 million years after the Big Bang. These early stars were forged out of the material that was available to them at the time — mostly hydrogen, some helium, and a touch of lithium.
As these stars lived out their lives, they converted their starter elements into progressively heavier elements, which astronomers call “metals.” Eventually, some of these early stars exploded as supernovae, which spewed their trapped metals out into the cosmos. Then, the next batch of stars formed from the resulting, slightly metal-enhanced clouds. On and on this went, with each successive generation of stars enriching the next with more and more metals.
“Our Sun likely descended from thousands of generations of short-lived massive stars that have lived and died since the Big Bang,” said lead author Kevin Schlaufman of Johns Hopkins University in a press release. “However, what’s most interesting about this star is that it had perhaps only one ancestor separating it and the beginnings of everything.”

Makes me think they are way off on the timing of the big bang. What are the odds one of the oldest stars happens to be in our galaxy?

Big bang happened everywhere. There was no "middle" point. Think of it like a balloon being blown up. As you put air in it, everything on the surface expands away from every other point equally (except it happens in 3 dimensions instead of two like on a balloon). However, if you stand on any planet or star it might appear to YOU that you are at the center. But any other observer on any other star would come to the same conclusion. A lot of people have a hard time with this concept.
So, yes, it's possible for some of the oldest stars to be in our neighborhood.

The Big Bang was literally just that and they’re could be thousands or millions of these old stars scattered into space. Why couldn’t there be one in our galaxy?

And these stars without a doubt will be the last things left in this universe. They burn their fuel very, very slowly and their lifespan is trillions of years. So this one in all likelihood as old as it may be is only just barely getting started.

Literally zero chance of that.
Also, 2000 years isn’t enough time for it (were it to be big enough; 8x our sun or more) for it to go from a main sequence to a star primed for a supernova event, we’d see the process by now.
Also also, a white dwarf could go supernova provided it is part of a binary star system and could steal mass from its partner star. But I think we’d know if it was part of such a system.
The universe is a crazy place.
