Third question: "Do you make much doing that?"
Maybe he was making small talk? Could give a vague but friendly answer like "Yeah, we do alright for ourselves." or "It pays the bills."

Pretty much this. If it's someone asking about career oppurtunity or a good friend asking for a legit reason I don't mind at all sharing. However, if it's some guy I went to high school with asking to then try to brag about how much he makes at the paper mill I tell him to frick off.
This is a good summary of how I feel about the situation.

I usually say "Not enough" and laugh and they get that it's not something I want to discuss.

ya that could have just been a form of "how's business going"

Just tell them "tree fiddy." When they ask you three fifty what, just keep repeating "tree fiddy."

What’s the best way to respond without being a jackass?
Why should I worry about impressing an a-hole that I am a jackass?

Meh. Is it tacky when someone tells you how much they make without your asking?

tell em about tree fiddy.

Just my experience:
Salaried people don't discuss it.
Hourly people flat out compare pay checks so everyone but the top earner has something to bitch about.

It is in poor taste. I just respond with, "not enough".

I agree with the OP. It is trashy and pretty offensive in my opinion to ask folks what kind of money they make at their jobs.
If it comes up in casual conversation and they volunteer it, I'm OK with it, but even then I find it strange for folks to talk about their salaries, unless they are on some sort of ego trip and trying to impress.

if someone that I am friends with asked and they weren't being an a-hole or whatever, I wouldn't mind discussing it.
Had lunch last Friday with a guy who was student employee of mine a hair over a decade ago. We're still close today and I was telling him about another close buddy of mine who is hiding "man-cave" purchases from his wife because she acts like they're poor, despite her earning close to six-figures and him doing okay himself. At one point or another, I said something along the lines of "you're pretty close to six-figures now or over, right?" I assumed as much because I know what he does for a living and who he works for. His response was "over". I don't think he minded saying it, though I probably wouldn't have asked him had I thought it through a little more. Still, I don't think it was a big deal. The point was simply that he and his wife are doing well and living well (within their means) making about the same as my other friends who are pinching pennies and would make you feel like they needed a handout. He and my other friend's wife both make more than me and I'm quite happy for them both.

People routinely post every detail of their personal life on the internet, I guess it just evolved to finances.

I don't think I've ever been asked outside of situations where income info is needed (credit, financial advice, tax prep, etc.)

my experience with this guy...whatever he says its a 100% chance he's overshooting by at least 30%.

I have people tell me what they make out of the blue. I think they're trying to impress me, but I make more than them.

luckily on the OT you don't have to ask. Just assume even the most junior OTer makes high 6 figures.

I was told at a young age. When two people talk about how much money they make, one of them will always walk away mad
Better not to have that conversation

I have a cousin who came from money. He knows I do well enough. He always talks about how I make more than him and I'm being cheap. He has a trust fund type situation and really doesn't care if I do bring in a better salary, but just hates when I back out of activities because I don't feel like spending the money. With him I play it up. Any time he makes a comment like "dude, you make six figures, you can afford to fish offshore this weekend", I just reply that I made 6 figures by July but it's not changing the fact that I don't want to pay for the trip. I just BS him, but with BS that could possibly be true in a perfect situation. Over the years it's gotten to the point that I think he has no clue when I'm being remotely serious, so I make anywhere between 100k and 1MM a year
