Asking how much money someone makes

I find it tacky and trashy and yet people ask it so frequently. I’m beginning to think I’m in the minority. Do you find it tacky when some asks how much money you make?
I never respond and try to play it off as not that much. What’s the best way to respond without being a jackass?

It is. However, if it comes up in conversation while talking about other opportunities, I don't see it as negative.

It depends on my relationship with said person.

I feel you. We live in a tacky, trashy time of history. Have you checked out our president and his supporters?

Sounds to me like you just hang out with trashy people.
I never have this happen.

Ask them to guess, then laugh at whatever they respond with.

Maybe when you are dealing with $12 to $20 an hour this type of discussion happens.
I can't recall in a very long time talking annual salaries with someone. None of their fricking business, or mine.

In my experience, it's the hookers that ask this the most.

I've never really been asked...of course fry cooks don't make much
I find it just as tacky when people announce what they make

I usually say $1 more than they say they make just to piss them off

I find it silly that it's so taboo but I never, ever hear anyone ask it.
