I don't think it should be a taboo topic, personally.
I had a buddy take a bachelor trip to Cancun for a 2-3 days a couple years back and half the guys on the trip were recently out of undergrad. It was a ~$1500 trip which is pretty steep for a weekend trip for a recent college grad making under $50K.

How much do you make, baw?

I'm with you, also when people ask how much something you own costs.

This rarely comes up in reality.
But for me, I don't really care. My salary is posted online for anyone to see. My parents were always open with me about their salaries. It doesn't change my perception of my friends if I find out their salaries.
It's really not a big deal, but it's definitely tacky as hell to ask.

I don't see any problem with discussing salaries when looking at careers/opportunities or things like that. Just for morbid curiosity is tacky tho.
I do think it's absurd how taboo it is to talk about salary with people at the same position in the same company tho. The more information you have, the better you can negotiate raises/promotions etc.

Probably true.

I only feel uncomfortable in this situation if the conversation is with someone who I know is not as fortunate as I am. If it's someone who's in a similar situation to me, then I don't mind discussing it.

IMO, this goes beyond same position/same company. I think it's important to know your market value, and you can get that information if you know what others in your field make.

You know that's management-driven, right?

While that's true and the main reason that management wants to keep you in the dark, it is also terrible for morale for folks at the same position and same experience to find out they're making vastly different salaries (mainly for the lower earner, of course).

Yea I'm aware.
It's absurd.
It's absurd.

I find it tacky and trashy and yet people ask it so frequently. I’m beginning to think I’m in the minirotiy. Do you find it tacky when some asks how much money you make?
I never respond and try to play it off as not that much. What’s the best way to respond without being a jackass?
I had a guy at a car wash do this sort of do this. Talked to me abut me about my car. Asked me where I worked and what I do there. Said they must pay well and asked me what the "going rate was." I just pretended he didn't say it.
I wasn't sure if he was just nosey or wanted to have sex with me. I usually assume it's the latter.

More than I deserve but not as much as I want.

I find it silly that it's so taboo but I never, ever hear anyone ask it.
It's taboo because the corporations want to keep us in the dark so that we don't keep asking for raises. If people are secure they have no problem talking about salary. It's not really a measure of much anyway and it's not really secret.
Anyone can look up average salaries and get a ballpark on what you make as a teacher, lawyer, architect, engineer, short order cook.
In other countries it's not a taboo subject. In the US it is to maximize profitability and keep the employees blissfully ignorant.

No one ever really wants to know how much you make
Just say you do ok
Just say you do ok

It depends on the context.
For instance, if I'm talking to my nephew about what he wants to major in when he gets to college and he asks about my career then that's a natural segue to how much I make.
My family doesn't have a hangup talking about our finances amongst ourselves.

My cousin, who is not a high roller, has been running around with a group of high rollers for the past few years. Why they choose to hang out with him and apparently pay for him to do so is beyond me and another story all together. He recently told me what each of them makes per year and I found it so odd because after taking a minute to think about things, I couldn't tell you what a single one of my friends makes. Why would someone need to know that or care?

Not to turn this in to a race thread, but what are the demographics you are referring to?
People sometimes ask me how much I make, but that is rare. However, I am frequently asked how much my car costs.
I would say that out of everyone who has asked me how much my car costs -- a legit 95% have been black. Honestly, I cannot think of a single time a white person asked me how much my car costs, so I am pretty confident in that 95%......
Not trying to make this a race issue, but I noticed this awhile back, and the trend still continues. It seems black people just don't have the same filters...perhaps?

Why would you worry about this when you are responding to "tacky and trashy" questions?
