re: Ascension parish president proposes year-long moratorium on new developments

quote:No. They added a center lane to it over five years ago. That's not "expanding" it.
Wasn't 73 just expanded?
They need to four lane it all the way from Hwy 30 to Hwy 42. It's fricking retarded that they didn't do that to begin with.

Good thing repairing the flood damaged houses will create jobs.

quote:With the way the locals are disgusted by lack of infrastructure while neighborhood after neighborhood goes up, if they put up a vote that would change the parish by laws and require developers to expand the road the entire length of the development (or pay for that stretch) - then it would probably get close to a 100% vote. The damage is mostly already done, and you're right - nothing can be done about that. But every swinging dick 2nd/3rd generation landowner that wants to make money off of grandpa's land should absolutely be required (by law) to pay for infrastructure upgrades. Every little stretch of land you see is getting crammed with development. I know it's the running joke to say _______ is out of control, but it really is talking about this subject. Every house you see is at least two more cars on the road. The traffic grows exponentially when you develop a new neighborhood. And the traffic is already bad to begin with.
I honestly don't see what you can get the developer to do to the main arterial road they are linking to beside add turn lanes.

At the end of the day, it all boils down to how much money everyone can make, the current tax payer be damned.

Original plan called for it but funding was short. They did build it so the rights of way will not be a problem like they were last time

Bingo... infrastructure needs to be taken care of parish-wide.

How did Spanish Lake Elemntary do after these rains

I just want to add a few things. Our parish hasn't had their priorities in order. The people that are banging the drums about this moratorium are going to be sorely disappointed when nothing changes. It doesn't matter if you build 1 house or 10000 houses if the drainage isn't improved and maintained. Take Hwy 44 near 30 for example. That road has flooded in that spot in every hard rain since I've been on this earth. No fixes. A couple years ago, they dug ditches but didn't replace or clean out culverts. There are multiple spots on 621, Bayou Narcisse, etc that floods into the road and the other side of the ditch is dry.
Until parish leadership gets their heads out of the sand and actually put taxpayer money to work instead of paying for fishing trips, nothing will change.

yeah, i don't know who decides which company gets the contracts but, they should be fired.
just look at the recently reworked intersection at airline/621. in front of the trailer place, they reworked the drainage there and the water goes nowhere, even when it's not raining there is water sitting there.

Also, digging a water retention pond on a site and using that dirt to build up the area is a total farce. The damn pond stays full of water so how does that allow it to function as intended as a retention pond?
The developers have convinced Government that this works, when it reality it only helps to mitigate drainage in that development. If you follow the FEMA guidelines, it’s in direct violation. Sooner or later, FEMA is going to say enough is enough, and flood insurance won’t be affordable. These parish governments are approving these developments without taking into account upstream and downstream drainage. When you build up land directly in the path of natural drainage, there is no way to mitigate it. Guaranteed it’s going to cause additional flooding. This needs to stop NOW

The school does just fine. They filled in the slough and the school is basically on a mountain. The problem is people southeast of the school get fricked because that was the path to bluff swamp before it got dammed off.

73 needs to be 4 lanes with a center turn lane from airline Highway to Highway 75, or at least to Highway 30.
Is there even enough land for that to happen? Is 3 lanes the best they can do there?

That is correct. And the people North of it get the water that backs up because it has no place to go.

There is enough land, they just didn't have the money to go 4 lanes at that time and this was told to me directly from a council woman when I asked her this exact question. The stupid thing is, they did curb and gutter with subsurface drainage on both sides rather than leaving one side open ditch for future expansion. Now they are locked in and it will be even more expensive to go wider.

I keep scratching my head all the new subdivisions built since 2010 in The Bottom when almost everything flooding there from rain in 2001

What’s funny to me is how all these subdivisions in ascension are popping up with $400k+ homes in it. How does all of the sudden every Tom, dick and Harry have the means to buy a 400k house in ascension? These homes being added should bring in substantial amount of addition revenues to fix the drainage and traffic. No complaints about the schools here
