As we get into Hurricane season I did the math on fuel costs for generator..

I have 22kW Generac. For Ida, it ran for @ 7.5 days straight 24/7, stopping only to change filter and oil once, @ 20 minutes.
Whole house with 3 central air units. one unit I turned off after a day.
Total gas used was 315 ccf, which is @ 275 ccf more than normal.
They way I figure 7.5 days of use roughly equals 330 gallons of natural gas.
Total cost for those days @ $275

Was at a friends house when the power went out and their whole home kicked on five seconds later. My first thought- "I am getting one of these as soon as possible."

Better get that thing serviced before hurricane season starts again. One oil change is not enough for that much running time. I ran mine for 17-20 hours a day for 12 days and changed my oil six times.
Anyway, I’m sending my wife to a hotel for the next hurricane season. frick that shite.

That seems like a lot of oil changes.

My back of the envelope math said it was about twice as expensive as electricity (at that time, likely closer to 1.5x now). Well worth it to have zero interruption. Annual service was done in October and everything is in tip top shape, ready to go for next season.

Have a 20KW Cummings, house has a single 4 ton AC unit, ran 13 hours during a outage last May,. At the price of NG at that time it worked out to $1.40/ hour. price of NG has doubled since then so looking at around $75/ day this season if running the the AC

No it isn’t
Edit: Also keep in mind the electricity bill is $0 for those 7 days so if you contrast the price of $45 a day if gas to what you pay daily for electricity you are probably paying $35 a day probably. Still sucks, but its cheaper than a motel for sure.

Are you using old oil? Don’t need that many changes for synthetic lube

Technically, but there were extended stay hotels in Hattiesburg that were $35/day for (mandatory) 10-days ($350 total) in a city unaffected by power outages, food shortages or 12-hour gas pump lines.

How so?
2 smaller units, one for Upstairs and one for Downstairs with dual air vents in bedroom in case upstairs unit goes out, plus small unit in a detatched back apt.
I had one old large whole house A/C unit go out and sat in heat for 7 days waiting for parts. replace with two smaller separate units.
Point is a 22kW can run all that.
Enough of this, It's hard to type in backseat of my Bently when the driver keeps turning on the way to the heliport.

Operating it is cheaper than a hotel...but how much did it cost to buy and then install? I really have no clue but know it aint cheap. Purchase price has to be factored in when calculating break-even...
