Some people are just not good test takers. The standardized testing model may be the best measure of intelligence that we have managed to come up with thus far but that doesn't make it infallible.

That or the classic OT anecdotal response, "yeah, well I know a guy who made a 16 and he's a millionaire!"

More states, including Louisiana, are requiring ALL students to take the SAT or ACT test. This would certainly account for some of the drop in standardized scores.

..."adding students who don't necessarily care about attending an institution for higher learning could equal a drop in the overall scores. That did happen. Louisiana students previously had an average ACT score of 20.3. This year, testing all eligible seniors, the average score dropped to 19.5."

I forget which comedian it was, but he did a bit on this phrase.

"I find it interesting when people claim they're intelligent, but they're just not good test-takers. They're like 'I'm just not a good test-taker', and I'm like 'oh, you mean those things where you have to demonstrate that you actually know stuff?'"

It might be overused, but there is validity to the concept of test anxiety.

Flounder is a fish. "Founder" can also mean to plummet.

Agreed. Either word would be appropriate here. Founder or Flounder. But founder is probably a better fit.

That may be so, but it's a real thing. If you've got really good deductive reasoning skills, you can get by on an exam not knowing all that much.

A lot of teachers are lazy and just waiting on a paycheck. Others don't really know anything about the subject they teach or are more interested in the students "liking" them by making the class ridiculously easy or letting the kids goof off.

Intelligence...... in the technological age that we live in, an increase in good grades is expected, but as you pointed out, some of the intelligence is due to grade inflation. Kids really don't need to learn from memory in today's world, as to much they seek is only a click away. Hopefully this will result in the students applying themselves in more constructive ways no that time doesn't have to be spent researching information for an answer.

Founder as a verb (not related to a ship) means to fail. Flounder is struggling, though it hasn't completely failed or "sunk." In this context flounder is more appropriate. A marriage in trouble is floundering, it has foundered once it has ended in divorce. The SAT scores are floundering or struggling as they relate to grade inflation, they haven't yet foundered.

I had read that standardized test scores were on the raise. And just from my interactions with the youngins, I'm not quite sure if they are functionally smarter or just better test takers.

They teach kids to take tests now. The whole schools system is set up so that the school itself grades well. They aren't actually putting out better students, they are fudging the paperwork. It's like when you go to the drive through and they ask you to pull up to the front when no one is behind you. It helps nobody out, but they get to write down that they only kept a car at the window for 30 seconds. Service isn't any better, but they get to report that it is.

My dad retired from teaching around 1 1/2 years before getting the highest retirement he could because he was fed up (along with a good job offer). They won't suspend horrible kids because having too many suspensions looks bad on the school, so you are left with troublemakers in the classroom. Your major subjects are taught so students can fill in a bubble that get's a right answer, not so that the actually know and understand them. Right about my sophomore year of highschool, he took a Gifted & Talented job. Then about 10 years later went back to a regular classroom. Somewhere in that time, he said the whole thing completely transformed and he couldn't stand teaching anymore. He had been sheltered with the GT kids, but retired halfway through that first year back in a regular classroom setting.
