Two. Wife owned a townhouse that I moved in to before we got engaged. We bought our starter in 2006 before we got married, then built in 2008 when she was pregnant with our oldest. I like to think we’ll follow our kids wherever they go, but if we stay in this house, I’ll be fine with that, too. It’s 2750sf all on 1 floor, so it should be easy to manage when we get older. We refi’d in 2020 after we turned a spare garage into a bonus room, so we’re 4 years into a 30 year, 3.375% mortgage.

for the life of me I'll never understand that mindset, not criticizing, just don't get it

If you pay property taxes, you never really own it. Miss a tax payment and see how fast government slaps a lean on it, if not outright sell it.
First, it’s lien, not lean……
Second, that is not how any of it works……Most states hold a tax sale where somebody pays the taxes and they accrue interest on what has to be redeemed. Then, depending on the state, you have two years to redeem it before a tax deed is issued.

Two primary residences. One when I was 26, the other twenty one years ago. Bought my mom out of a camp and am building one in that spot. So, three…ish?

One. I just put a new roof on it out of my own pocket. I'm dying in this thing.

Built my first all by myself. However, I was 7 and it was one room in a wooded area adjacent to the neighborhood I lived in with my parents. Lots of scrap wood from homes being built in the neighborhood. A few neighborhood girls my age visited and we showed our pee pees to each other.

Six.
As an only child, I inherited the house in which I was raised.
And the one I own now.
Plus, I used to own four rental houses; I later sold all of them.

Ditto.
Kept moving during the careers and wound up with 6 houses that we co-owned with the bank.
With the low interest rate that we got, I am in no rush to pay the latest one off. Investments are outpacing the payoff at the moment.
